Stay Put will ya?

Submitted by curtnoel on Sun, 2008-02-03 16:06. Space Empires V General

Is there (or why ISNT there) a way to simply tell a ship/fleet to stay right where it is and dont ask me for orders again! In most games this is called sleep. I have 3 fleets sitting on a planet in enemy territory getting resupplied/repaired and cant put them into sentry mode....at the same time I have a ton of ships being manufactured and need to tell them where to go to fight...but EVERY turn I have to cycle through all those fleets to get to the new ships??? Talk about tedious and ridiculous.

Listen I like this game alot but for goodness sakes before you start making huge sweeping add-ons...why not fine tune what you have first. I should be able to tell a ship/fleet sit right there and I will get you when I am damn well ready.

Although I would also like something along the lines of a "kill movement points (without expending supplies)", one thing I did find that makes it a lot easier is under empire options. Select next/previous options, and have it skip ships in fleets. In order to cycle through fleets you will have to use the next/prev fleet buttons. But it does take fleets out of the space bar / next unit loop.

Excellent advice, Zippyriver, and quite the time saver.

You can also set waypoints for your newly constructed ships, so that they will start moving as soon as they are built. I'm sure someone will chime in with how to do it - I never use them so I can't remember. I think it's Ctl-1 thru Ctl-9 and there's an option in the construction queue to set an automatic moveto.

Go to Empire Options -> Next/Previous. You can skip all sorts of things.

Wow thanks for the advice thats really useful stuff there now I have even MORE questions:

I am playing the computer and this one opponent has managed to beat me in the tech game. His applied research is lower than mine so he must have way more plantes than me which means he is using some strategy I need to know....now this is a long shot here but is there a way to actually SEE what the computer is doing right? Like actually replay some turns and OBSERVE the opponent? I only ask this absurd question because I know this game is a modders paradise and maybe just maybe someone has made this ability...

Ok, heres what you can do - in game, click on top left icon (menu) and goto "Players" and enter as password master (master is the default password unless you change it pregame), anyways, you can click on which players are computer controlled and which are controlled by the player (you). Just uncheck whichever empire you want to control and enter the password and click the next turn button. You'll be the chosen race and if you unchecked multiple empires it will take them all in succession. Just after you get through with that empire click the next turn button and it will take you to the next empire in line.

OK I will try that...also just an FYI if you tell it to not cycle through fleets it works fine HOWEVER if any ship in that fleet has movement points available when you click for next turn it will tell you a ship has no orders and then you hit the button to see which ship it is and...nothing. Because its in the fleet lol. Thought it was a bug. VERY annoying and confusing.

Now here is something that I think really IS a bug...if an enemy/event makes your population go POOF on a planet the warning says you lost facilities on a planet...then when you go to check that planet all of a sudden you have room for alot more facilities (jumped from 2000kt to 10000kt I was like..WHAT?? YAY!!) I tried to build the new facilities not realizing I had lost my population and the time to complete said ...never so I figured it was because I was terrible at managing my resources empire wide and it would correct itself on the next turn (since I had unmothballed a fleet). So I finally get a clue and transport some pop over and LO! after I put people on the planet the facilities room goes from 10000kt BACK to 2000kt and I had no room for those facilities that were ALREADY in the queue. I thought about trying to build em anyway and exploit it but I figured things wouldnt allow that. Talk about annoying.

Just an FYI. Not planning on emailing any save games as I played a few more turns and doubt I could reproduce it.

It is not a bug. The planet is doomed, for your population can not breath the atmosphere. This lowers the build space. However it can be undoomed, when you take the population from the planet. (You may want to put breathers on it...) The game engine simply undooms it, when no non-breathers are on the planet.

The planet may very well be doomed, but not breathing the atmosphere only makes it domed. Eye-wink

I noticed when playing an earlier version (might have been demo). If I had a fleet selected, and put the fleet in sentry mode... EVERY ship in the fleet went into sentry mode. Then those ships were automatically "finished" moving for that turn. That seems to have been 'fixed'.

Did you start the game with an AI bonus? If so, then that's what's happening: AI gets a multiplier to its resource generation and research/intel output, as well as a multiplier to construction rate. Note this multiplier is not applied to the score displays/comparisons (if you set the game to show score of everyone that is).

As for new ships, yeah I use the waypoint method (Ctrl+1~9, you can also send any ship to a waypoint by pressing 1~9 as well as making them rally points for newly constructed ships) and go through the log, looking for any special ships (colony ships, etc). Personally, I've grown to not use the Next/Prev ship buttons - Sentry only works when you're in a system that doesn't have hostiles. Is why I define a custom layout for my Ships List and review that if I really want to check on something.

If it was a serious game, I'd be writing my own notes in an external .txt file anyway.

Playing Touhou games (Go to this Wiki if interested. No, nobody else is that good/insane as that replay). No rush for SE

I don't understand what the problem was? What did you expect putting a fleet on sentry to do?
