Terraforming Engines

Submitted by Juju on Tue, 2008-01-22 07:13. SE:V MODs

Hi there,

a thought hit me while thinking about Terraforming options in SEV

There is this roleplaying game "Fading Suns" and its idea of terraforming includes
that it is a continues process which has to be upheld all the time or else the planets
degenerate back to ther prior form.

My thought was, would this Idea work in Space Empires V ?

Right now Terraforming and Planet Enhancing is like fire and forget, you build the engine,
and when its done you scrap the thing and build something else.

( actually i really don't know which benefit i gain from bettering the planetary environment .. at least in space empires ^^ )

So how about changing this to the other model.
Changing the atmospheric type of a planet ( from carbon dioxide to oxygen ) really wreaks havoc
whith the environment, but is permanent ( actually this case isn't covered in the rpg ^^ but I
think this changes are so drastic that you need another atmosperic plant to actually change it
back )
But after this to better a planet you need to build the Planet Enhancing Facility which ups the environment value and when the Facility is not working, the environment gets worse again.

Hmm .. yeah, thats about it .. so you should get some boni from good environment .. maybe
there should even be a few steps of facility space from domed habitat to coruscant style fully build
over planet.
Like
not-breathable and really crappy environment - domed habitat .. our people need all the protection they can get to get something done
bad environment - sheltered habitat .. okay so we can breathe but we can't use half of the planet because the football to pumpkin sized hailstorms in winter will even tear down maxicrete buildings
good environment - it rains sometimes and sometimes its to hot, but we can plaster the planet with buildings
optimal environment - flowers and butterflys everywhere .. it weathersattelites make it rain on our fields when we need it, and its never to hot, nor to cold and everybody loves each other ..
so .. frickin' hippies gets production boni .. Smiling

how do you like this idea, and do you think its possible Smiling

you can steal it as you like for mods, i for myself won't do any modding work because i lack the time
and patience to do so .. but i liked the idea and thought it was worth posting it.

Changing the atmosphere? Very nasty. Smiling

The only benefits currently to changing the planetary conditions are bonuses to your population growth, and through greater population growth, better production.

I was thinking of a negative change (Oxygen to CO2 or None) as a weapon. Kind of how the Klingons saw the Genesis device in the Star Trek movies. It would cause instant doming. Smiling

Thanks for the feedback of condition effects Smiling

So what do you think of the rest of my idea ?

And Vince is right .. the stacked model of planetary conditions would bring some sense into those
condition changing bombs .. can't remember their name for their pure uselessness ( i think in stock its
the planet bombardment tree, which give you this nice clusterbombs and planetary napalm Smiling

as an alternative you could also blow up the planet and remake it with steller manip until you get one
with the right atmospehre ^^

Laughing out loud

Too much work, unless you're really angry at the former owners.
