Meeting new empires with a rebel ship

Submitted by zemnar on Fri, 2008-01-11 14:48. Space Empires V General

Here's another question about the effects of intel. I have a ship I just "persuaded" to join my empire from an enemy empire. It's in an isolated location of the universe and has 3-4 other empires in the system which I never met before.

I realized that it never intrduced me to the new empires, nor do they show up in the communications or intel windows... I thought maybe this was because the ownership of the ship just changed "over night" and the diplomacy routines didn't pick it up. So I left the system and then came back, thinking "now it HAS to see the new empires..." Nope.

The only way I was able to get the new empires to show in my comms and intel screens was to warp in a ship that was "always" owned by me... This worked immediately.

Is this by design or a possible bug? I could see that maybe empires don't treat "rebel" ships as representatives of your empire... At least that explains the behavior, but is this by design?

This occurred in a Stock game v1.66.

I've never seen this, and (think) have done what you did many times. The issue may be that you met them while there was no explored connecting starlane to their system. I have seen a weird bug that caused me to lose control of ships that got warped to systems I hadn't explored. The ships were all fully functional, but I could not see them or give them orders. They'd even show up in my list of ships I owned.

Yep, that is it! I ran some additional turns since my last posting and it seems that you need to have a connecting star-lane to have communications open to the other empires... I've been keeping myself isolated to avoid "contaminating" my home systems with alien presence...

Oh, well, guess I have to decide wether to open communications with them or just blast away with wild-abandon...

Decisions, decisions...

Thanks for your help.
