Migration borking my colonies

Submitted by Astorax on Fri, 2008-01-11 02:53. Space Empires V General

I'm not sure if this is a by-product of simple Migration or a bug but I have treaties with 3 other different atmosphere breathing races that allow them to migrate to my empire. Now, I built population transports to move my pop to my atmosphere type planets only after they had migrated there so I could benefit from increased facility space etc. Well, after I offload my pop and drop them on another world and start to go to the next one I'll check back to that planet (after a couple/few turns) and find 1-3m of my pop back on it again, making it a domed colony AGAIN. I checked my freighter and it could hold way more pop than it picked up originally so it wasn't a matter of just running out of space on the transport. What I'm thinking is that my own people are migrating back to that planet, screwing it over and re-dome'ing it.

Am I crazy or is this a bug/feature?

As far as I know population will only ever migrate to a world with an atmosphere they can breathe. I don't know what's happening here but I very much doubt that it is migration. Do you have any ministers turned on? They might be doing something screwy.

Only ministers are resupply and umm enemy intel? The one where it estimates what the enemy has in the way of ships/planets/techs.

Perhaps loading the original population isn't the correct sollution.
Try launching your population into space (scrap cargo). Never had any problems that way...

...! Thats mass murder! I'm just trying to micromanage it sort of where I can boost my CO atmosphere planets pop with the excess pop from migrated planets. Ordinarily I wouldn't have a problem with the atrocity solution but I was trying to be clever =/

I have had that happen to me. The un-domed planet population vs max population (low %) caused incorrect atmosphere breathers to migrate from 100% full planets causing them to become domed.

The only fix I found was turning the population minister ON. This is supposed to manage migration better. The only issue I have found with this is that on a domed planet, after migration moves in correct breathers the minister will scrap all the non-breathers. Yes it scraps them before I have a chance to move them to another planet.

I receive a notice that planet X scrapped and recovered xxx organics, in the End of turn summary. Then that planet that was domed is now un-domed and the population now breathes that atmosphere.

There is definitely a bug in the migration. The non-breathers should migrate away after breathers migrate in. At the very least they should stop growing.

Are you sure you didn't leave the planet vacant? I think it will always migrate to vacant planets whether any race can breath it.

Quite sure, as I only grabbed my atmosphere pop off the planet after it had been migrated to by the correct aliens. And no, I didn't grab the aliens too.

I just don't use ministers or allow migration. The above posts are just another reason to do it that way. I'm not just going to complain about the AI on one hand then give it some control over parts of my empire on the other. Smiling

What actually is the point in migration? The hand book is kinda restricted in the purpose of it. I know it helps toward increasing a planets population, but what does the population do? Does it help produce more supplies per turn? Build units/ships faster? I've honestly no idea.

It helps your population increase yes which in turn gives your production a boost because of said population increase. Also, migration can allow the right type of atmosphere breathers to populate a planet so you can take your normal pop off and thus increase the facility space available for construction - undomeing the planet.

I've since started letting the Minister control the pop and screw my extra pop. Its alot easier to not even have to mess with it beyond having to go to the planets where "cargo was scrapped" (which means however millions of your pop was spaced) and build extra facilities.

One of the key points in any Treaty with another race is to allow migration, especially if its just their species to your empire and thats it. Well, its key if they breathe a different atmosphere type than your race does.
