Entering cheat codes on a non-american keyboard

Submitted by zomis on Sat, 2008-01-05 10:16. Space Empires V FAQs

To enter cheat codes, it says "press the ~ key, enter the code, and press the ~ key again"

However, the ~ key is probably not located at the same place on your keyboard as mine.

This is my keyboard:

And this might be your keyboard:

For me to press ~, I must press Alt Gr and then a specific key. This however does not print the ~ character. To actually write the ~ character and the ~ character only on screen I must press Alt Gr, that key, then space.
I've tried many various ways of entering the cheat codes, I've tried to write a ~ character, but it ain't that easy. I've also tried what seems to be the American way of entering the character (pressing Shift and the top-left key).

Is there any way to find out, by looking at the game's appearance, to know that I've successfully pressed the right '~' key?

I really like the good old Warcraft / Age of Empires way of entering cheats. That is, a window which pops up and says: "Enter cheat code" / "Send Message".

You can configure the hotkey to enter cheat mode in the Controls menu (its in the main settings menu).

When you go into cheat mode, there is a little display right above the galaxy map of what you are typing.
