pbw.cc - does it work?

Submitted by Souljourner on Fri, 2008-01-04 09:24. Space Empires V General

found the site through links from here..... but it looks ancient. The last news item on there is from 2004. Does it actually work for SE 5 games? Is it reliable? Seems like half the links on the site don't actually work. All the ones a the top that link to community or forums don't do anything in Firefox or IE.

I really like the idea of a nice dedicated place to process end of turn files, but it needs to be reliable. I could probably hack together some kind of server running SE 5 via command line if I really needed to, but if PBW works, that's fine by me.

Yes it works.

I'm in 3 games on there right now.

We have a new game starting tomorrow if you want to jump in?

Game name: SE V - DevnullMod 1.66

Game Details: Note: this game is using DevnullMod 1.66 from http://www.devnullsoftware.com/se5. I have to list the game as "stock SE V" until PBW has been updated for this version of the mod. Also note that this is something of a test game, and while it will be played as a full-fledged game, I will make scores, etc public as well as ask for battle reports, etc so I can make sure things are balanced.

Starting resources: High
Starting planets: 1
Home planet value: Good
Score display: all
Technology level: Medium
Racial points: 5000
Quadrant type: Cluster
Quadrant size: Medium or Large (depending on # players)
Event frequency: Medium
Event severity: High
Technology cost: Low
Victory conditions: Last empire standing or as agreed-upon by players
Maximum units: Max
Maximum ships: Max
Computer players: None!
Computer difficulty: N/A
Computer player bonus: N/A
Neutral empires: No
Other game settings: Fairness settings such as "all HW's same size" & "no cheating!"

Game Setup File is here: http://www.devnullsoftware.com/se5/devnullmod166.gsu.zip
(The galaxy size is tentative - if we get more or fewer players it might be a different size!)

SE5 Files hosted on Filefront (Patches, Mods, Races, etc)

I haven't used it much with SEV, but the SEIV community has several games still rolling. Reliable, good site.

Thanks for the invite to the game. I'm working on getting one set up with my friends and want to try it out with them first, but maybe next time Smiling

Yes, PBW works with SEV, and it works well. Great service. I'd bet that most of the multiplayer SEV games played over the internet use PBW. Everything's automated, and the admins are responsive to issues and requests.

It's also been pretty reliable in my experience. I think that in the year I've been playing, the server has gone down perhaps 4 or 5 times, but it has usually been back up in a matter of hours.

Try it. You won't regret it.

The reason the most recent news item is from 2004 is that nobody has bothered to post any more recent news items. (I'm one of the admins at PBW, but I'm not even sure how to update that page.) Most people bookmark the Games or Forums page and go straight there rather than through "Choose Your Destiny" or Home. The Forums don't get much traffic, but we have several hundred active users playing SEIV and/or SEV.

I'd like to jump in but time appears to be a problem. Shame.
