Phased vs Regular Shields? |
Hi All-
I typically research and outfit newer model ships with phased shields when they become available and just noticed something odd. Curious if anyone else has this issue or if I'm just lucky/broke something.
I just had a situation where a ship with phased shields and phased shields only (with normal armor) were blasted to pieces by fighters using anti-proton lasers. I had thought Phased Shields block Anti-proton beams and Meson blasters. Am I wrong in this? I looked at damage types and shield levels etc, but don't seem to see what weapon type is declared regular (normal?) vs Phased (Skips normal shields) except in the components.txt file.
I'm using the BETA 13 of FQM (looks great btw )plus a few self tweaks to formulae but given what I've done I don't think the mod is the issue...
Any ideas?

Re: Phased vs Regular Shields?
Depends on mod used, but usualy early phase shields are weaker than normal shields (but aginst phased weapons its still better). So ship with new phase shield can work worse aginst APB/MB than with normal shields.

Re: Phased vs Regular Shields?
The only advantage of phased shields is that they block phased polaron beams, which skip normal shields. They do not render your ship invulnerable to other weapons; that would be horribly unbalancing
In SE4, the phased shield generators provided about 25% more shields than the same level of regular shield generators, though; not sure what it is in stock SE5; I think they're either the same or slightly less... of course, phased shields were harder to come by in SE4, if I recall correctly... you had to research halfway up the shield tech and max out regular shields before you even got phased shields level 1!
edit: and when I say phased shields "block" phased polaron beams, that means they treat PPB's the same as any other weapon, rather than letting them pass through; that doesn't mean they are invulnerable, though that might be interesting and not horribly unbalancing if you modded it that way

Re: Phased vs Regular Shields?
No Mod in existence so far has tried to fundamentally change the existing structure of SE - they've just tweaked details, numbers etc. Thus, Phased Shields are ordinary shields that happen to sit and take damage from Phased Polaron beams instead of letting them through. There is no "stops all damage from these weapons" defence - closest would be Emissive Armour, excessive amounts of Crystalline Armour and... I think it was called the 'dampener' or something under the Crystalline tree that reduces damage taken from Beam weapons by a certain percentage.
The sort of thing you are thinking of CAN be modded, but nobody has.

Re: Phased vs Regular Shields?
Why would you want to mod in an Übergun like that?
Simply fight your opponent with regular guns for the damage/kt/s benefits.
Build yourself an elite forces squadron of PPB wielding warships.
If the enemy uses regular shields for more hitpoints against your ships of the line, your elite forces can decimate them at will.
If the enemy used phased shields for protection from your elite forces, your ships of the line will kill them quicker.

Re: Phased vs Regular Shields?
Phased shields act the same as regular shields, except that phased weapons don't pass through. Besides that, they should be taking damage as usual.
Did you mean that shields weren't blocking the weapons, or that you expected to take little or no damage from standard weapons?
