Design Types.txt and ColonyTypes.txt question

Submitted by Gothic Knight on Tue, 2007-12-25 11:03. SE:V MODs

Ok... Went to the .../Space Empires V/Data directory and modified the Design Types and the ColonyTypes files. Added some various ones that I usually manually type in to save me the trouble. Now the problem is, on the new ship types, when I click Autocomplete it fills it in, but does not add any weapons. Is there a file I need to mod that sets up what I want placed into each of those types I specified and do I have to do something further also with another file for the ColonyTypes?

Autocompletion is dependent upon the AI scripts; the AI scripts do not have any designs to use for arbitrary design names. The same applies to building facilities according to colony type. This is you can't add design types and colony types in-game, incidentally. The scripts hopefully have an else fallback for unknown data, but they won't really know what a "satellite transport" ship or a "mining-farming" colony is.

Can those portions of the AI script be modified to include designs for the new ship specifications? And if so, where are they located?

I can only give the unhelpful answer of "yes those AI scripts can be updated, but you'll have to ask a modder for where and how"

they are located in the AI files in each empire. if you are playing balance mod then these mey be in a different location but look in the folder "Strategy First\Space Empires \utilities\scriptparser\se5empirescripts" after modifying the shipbuilding stats you will have to recompile the AI script. after you have recompiled it you should place it in the mod folder you are using in the Empires folder. I've almost no experience with this but I have tested it once or twice to see that it works.

Hmm... Not looking to redo different empires. Just wanted to add a few default types, I.E. Scout (ship) and Terraform (planet) types to the list. But wanted it so I could also use the Autocomplete to correctly fill out the ships, etc. If that makes any sense...?

If all you really want to do use it for is your own memory - ie Explorer Ships are for Exploring - then just add it to the designtypes.txt and don't worry about the AI. It won't try to design any anyway so you don't need to tell it how. It's only if you want the AI to do something special with these new design types that you have to start playing around with the scripts.

You will, of course, have to keep creating them component by component - without the autocomplete. But is that really such a chore? It takes all of 30 seconds.

30 secs? Hey, that adds up. Smiling There must be someway to get the Autocomplete to work with user defined designs.

Hey Gothic Knight,

To get the AI to make designs for your new types you would be working with the Script_AI_DesignCreation file (in the Scripts Folder).

Lord of the Vik was correct; you have to recompile the .CSF file for every AI, and for every one of the default minister styles, with the changes to the design creation script. Otherwise, you will only get auto-completion to work correctly for some selections of shipset and minster style.
