Is this game patched enough to enjoy yet?

Submitted by Dizzy on Tue, 2007-12-18 13:29. Space Empires V General

The following is a hangup I'd have needed, but it's on patch 1.64 which hasnt been released yet.

8. Fixed - Fighter groups would not have the correct supplies when launched into an existing group.

So when the next patch gets put out, what's still left that's really broken? Are we left with AI that won't provide a challenge? Or has that been fixed and what else is wrong with this game?

‹ Are there still issues with GeForce 8 cards? Anyone running SEV on Vista64? ›

Been playing it (feverishly) for about a week, and have had zero problems. Consequently, I tend to leave it up running over night and had no crashes, and things seem to work as designed.

Under which Mod? AI writing is mostly in the realm of Mod Authors, with patches providing more/correct coding tools (read: functions), not the finished work.

Playing Touhou games (Go to this Wiki if interested. No, nobody else is that good/insane as that replay). No rush for SE

The game works fine for me. I only play multiplayer though with the Balance Mod. I seem to remember that Dizzy does not believe in Mods.

Patched Enough?-Enemy Planets Rebelling

Submitted by Kyloth on Wed, 2007-12-19 15:26.

Hi:
I am still finding that even when a planet is gained through Intel, I still do not receive control of the planet. Why? Is this a bug or does the controlling planet able to somehow take it back? Also I have never had any race surrender to me yet.

In stock, the planet is not given to the player responsible for the intel attack. I believe that is changed as of the next beta patch as a fix for a end of turn hang bug, but I haven't actually looked at the intel script to see if that was the change.

What often bugs me about patch lists is how elementary some of the items are. Or, in other words, items that anyone playing through a few games (or a beta tester) could easily find. Why wait? On the other hand, the large numbers of patch lists (and the items therein) show that support is very responsive to the community. Some of my own input and feedback to MM were incorporated in past lists. Smiling

The problem is not finding the bugs - the problem is convincing Aaron (the only developer at Malfador) that they're more important than the 8,472 billion other bugs that people have reported that he's so busy fixing Eye-wink

Not true. I like mods.

So does this game have any real hang ups at this point?

None that I have seen. If you use the BM 1.11 or now 1.12, it will give you a real run for your money. At this point I think the game is "mature" and will only get better.

The problem is also out of 8,472 billion only a few dozen get fixed at a time. Eye-wink
(Not to mention coding in that many bugs in the first place Smiling )

You try writing such a massive project without all sorts of bugs, and get back to us on how easy it was... Eye-wink

It's perhaps a too big project for one man.

Still, I think it's the design phase that has gone wrong, not the programming phase. There were just too many problems with many of his design choices that he failed to anticipate or compensate for.

The poor UI is the obvious example. More obscure examples include how he had not programmed the AI to cope with the new Fog of War feature. There's smaller details like how we weren't able to select a fleet leader, or unarmed ships fleeing automatically in combat regardless of tactics, even if they're the taskforce/fleet leader( thus taking the entire fleet with them out of combat ), etc.

One might deduce that he's spending all his time in the code, not playing the game enough to get a real sense of how it plays.

so what you're saying is that I comprise a fleet and a random fleet leader is chosen for a battle that may very well end up being an auxillary support ship and as it flees the battle my ENTIRE fleet also flees?

This one's obsolete - he wrote that sentence in past tense. I don't know if "don't retreat even if your leader is dead" strategy option isn't working (I've never lost my task force leaders so I wouldn't know), but it's there and I'm fairly certain it works now (may not have way in the distant past). Even if it's not working, quite a while back we got the option to specify which ship is our leader.

Mind, we did have to wait quite a while to get that feature patched in. But that's in the past now - poor design decision yes, in that it wasn't there from the start. No longer a consideration given it's there now.
