will having changed some of the descriptive text files, such as adding a few lines to your colonytype or designtype files have any effect on multi player games if those files don't match up on everyones computers?
i'd like to change those on my end for better organization and all, but wasnt sure if they were anything that the AI uses or if having a few more lines in there would cause synch errors in multiplayer because the files arent exactly the same.

You can test it by making a simultaneous turns, different machines savegame with the mod, then altering the files again. Add any random item to one of those files. Then, see if you can load the savegame with the new alteration. If you get data file complaints, you will not be able to play with such additions.
I would suspect you will not be able to, at least for design types, since they are not merely flavor text. Combat strategies depend on the design types; each strategy has specific move orders for encountering ships using each other strategy. I've never explicitly tested it, so this is just my assumption.
