Weak/Timid AI

Submitted by Zelleniad on Fri, 2006-10-13 11:40. Space Empires V General

Is it just me or is the AI in this game incredibly weak and timid? I've played 3 games so far. First was quick start, second was custom with normal AI, third was hard AI with the second option for AI boost.

Every game is the same, the AI never attacks me, even if I dont really build early defense. I just expand as much as possible in a system or two, then build a few ship yards and fill the rest with research centers. I tech up to light cruisers, build a fleet of 8-10 cruisers with large mount meson blasters, shields, armor, ect, and proceed to easily destroy whatever poor AI happens to be next to me.

I'm not a Space Empires vet. I doubt in 3 games my strategy is so good that I should be dominating this easily. Is this a known issue that is being worked on? Hopefully the answer isn't just to give the AI more of a cheating advantage. I really dont like AI that can only play a good game with massive cheats. Its fine if they cheat a little, or a lot when the human is really good. But at my level it should be able to beat me with little or no cheating.

Its a shame because this looked like a game I would be spending many fun hours with, but if the AI can't put up a decent fight, whats the point?

AI

Submitted by tmcc on Fri, 2006-10-13 12:26.

I have found the AI better in SEV than in the stock version of SEIV. It has attacked me in force, destroyed my not so well defended planets and routinely attacks unescorted colony ships in it's space. I still kick it's butt, but it is better.

That being said the real AI improvements will come from the mods. In SEIV the stock AI was quite weak but developed well in the modding community. I expect the same from SEV

Make sure you have neutrals off. They're speed bumps, nothing more. Sticking out tongue

I take it MM hasn't had a great of time to make the A.I any good. The game has various features that aren't working at the moment.

AI is a pain

Submitted by Thy Reaper on Sat, 2006-10-14 15:02.

Making a game of this magnitude is hard enough, especially doing it (mostly) alone. AI takes almost as much work as the whole rest of the game, if you want good AI.

I can't comment on the SE:V AI compared to SE:IV, because of the bugs in the demo making it difficult to play long enough to find another empire. But when the game comes out, I'll see how good it is.

does the upcoming 1.07 patch

does the upcoming 1.07 patch includes any AI improvements? seems they are needed, from my demo experience.

Doesn't look like it. At this point they're focusing on more urgent stuff, like trying to keep the game from crashing or letting all the features be usable. If there is an AI patch it will be later, when the game engine itself is in better shape.

On the other hand, much of the AI is scripted, so possibly the modders could do something about this. I'm already fiddling with some tweaks to the AI's research and construction priorities, and I'd assume others are much farther along.
