Follow that ship...

Submitted by Grimlock on Sun, 2007-11-18 21:02. Space Empires V General

Is there any way to get one of your ships to follow another empires ships .. i.e. you've spotted a fleet of theirs and want to keep an eye on it to see where its going..

Replay movement logs and so forth is tedious to have to do every turn..

Basically, it would be:

Order ship to follow.
End of turn, note which direction ship went.
At some point it will go out of sensor range.
When it is your ships turn to move, it moves in the direction of the last know direction, and sees if it can pick up ship on sensors.
If it doesn't it stops at end of movement and stops following.
If it does, it keeps following.

It could be an extension of the scout & explore actions.

Good idea, though don't think its possible in this (?). Would be great if that was a feature of Scout Ships.

I guess the only way in the current engine (unless i've missed how to do this?) is to select "Attack" rather than "Move". If ships are moving at a similar rate to you then you could follow them I guess.

Problem is if your ships are faster, or they stop, then unfortunately your ship would catch up and attack, which isn't what your after.

Maybe someone can mod that feature in?

Could be usefull but I'm assuming that moving at different times could present problems.

I know what ya mean, in the suggestions for the next game/patches area I suggested a energy trail scanner so you can see where a ship has been.

Closest I've come is modding the settings.txt file:
Can See Ship From Memory := FALSE to = TRUE, so at least I can remember where I saw the ships.
That we could navigate through space but couldn't remember what sector we saw a ship in always seemed a bit odd...

If you use the "attack" command as suggested by corestandeven, and assuming that he's right that that would follow ships after the turn computes, then it would work IF: You gave the tracking ship a strategy to immediately retreat fully from any engagement it entered. It would have to be fast enough to successfully retreat of course. That way, at the end of a turn the tracker would likely be sitting in the hex next to its quarry every turn.

1.62:
Fixed - Attack Seek orders should not be cleared if combat occurs but the target is not destroyed.
So you might have 10-20 combats per turn if you do that in simultaneous.
