Tips and suggestions for noobs

Submitted by madman22 on Sat, 2007-11-17 16:31. Space Empires V FAQs

Thought it might be nice to start a topic where experienced players can post little tips to help new/inexperienced players. I will get the ball rolling with a suggestion on facility construction.

When choosing which planets to build what facilities on, I suggest remembering that certain facilities receive bonuses for population. When I have a planet that has a small max pop (small or tiny domed planets) and low resource value, I usually place my Space Port and any Storage Facilities on that planet. This helps keep my larger planets open for facilities such as Research and Intelligence.

Yeah. Thats true, but usualy these modifiers from population are not big, so not doing it is not catastrophy. But every research/intel point counts, so its worth doing.
On the other hand, realy important facilities should not be on small/tiny planets, becose you cannot put much defense there. And early game you should build those facilities when you need them (eg. not need storage anyway), plus population is not maxed.
But for late game optimalization its good idea, if you can provide enough protection.

btw. i changed pop. bonuses to be sqrt(pop/1000) SY rate and sqrt(sqrt(pop/200)) and with this change its MUCH more important and interesting game (pop is in M of course).

Isn't storage, with 50k per facility, is now worth it in BM in the early game? Also, it might be worth it to relocate the SpacePorts from your Homeworlds (where you have the most pop). And it might be interesting to avoid to build SpaceYards on the smallest planets (unless front lines), you'll soon max out your production with SpaceYard Bases anyway.

I agree...storage facilities can be useful. If you have a fair amount of storage, you can reduce the amount of resource production you have (and devote the facility space to something else), knowing that during the "slow" times you can be saving up, and during the quick-burst "busy" times you'll still be OK. This isn't always the best solution for mineral resources since those are most likely to be heavily needed on a consistent basis, but it can be a good approach for organics and radioactives, which are more likely to vary in need.

Yes, for minerals you probably won't store more than 2-3 turns of production in the mid-game anyway - you need that space for research centers!

But storage is really great in the early game, when you produce a LOT more than you can spend.

IMHO that's a game design problem - no other game I know of has this issue of overproduction/insufficient storage in the early game. Because of this, the "Starting resources" option is actually "Starting Research".

When I use "New Game" feature and hit "Begin" it tells me that at least 1 player must be human. Fine where is the selection for choosing that?

Thanks a real nooob

There was this Terran who decided not to Colonize a planet because it was too cold, and he hated cold planets. Sure the air was breathable, but why bother? So, he stayed on his home planet, until his sun started to die. Then he said "Frack this, I'm going to the other planet". Before he got there, he ran out of supplies, and was stranded in a nebula. Then, unexpectedly, an alien race came along, and dropped it's refuse on the Terrans dormant ships. At first he thought, 'wtf?', but soon, he found all kinds of usable resources in their garbage, and was able to get his fleet going again. He was so happy that he sent a 'Thank You!' message to the unaware departing aliens.
Unfortunatly. another race of aliens was within shouting distance of his transmitters, and heard the estatic message. They promptly came and destroyed the interlopers.

There are three morals to this story:

Tip 1: Everyone who shits on you is not your Enemy. (You're not a noob if you find this forum and read it!)

Tip 2: Everyone who pulls you out of a pile of shit, is not your Friend. (If your still a noob after using tip one, then you need to find a new game! j/k)

Tip 3: If you're warm, and your people are happy, but you're still in a pile of shit, then keep your mouth shut!

That's the best tip I have, in a game where diplomacy matters!

My advice to newbies who may be getting discouraged by their game experiences is to stick with it. Its a labor of love. Give others the benefits of your experiences. I've learned alot here just by reading. Smiling
