'No Tactical Combat'

Submitted by thirdbatt on Tue, 2007-11-13 11:43. Space Empires V General

I've started two games so far with this checked. But what is it supposed to do? I can't see that it has any effect. I had assumed it would end the space tactical combat option, and run more like a multi player game. But I still have full control and turn interuption.

Am I doing something wrong? Is this in reference to something else?

Thanks,
Chad

In theory, "no tactical combat" means all combat should be decided in strategic mode.

Heh, afraid that theory isn't standing up to testing Eye-wink

I really hoped it would run like a multi player game. So I could just watch the combat 'movie' at the end of the turn.

Oh well.

Maybe there should be an option "Autoresolve combats" for the lazy players Eye-wink
Basically tactical combat, but without the graphics displayed, just some screen saying that combat happens.
Would of course take complexity from the game Sticking out tongue

Heh, I see it the opposite way.

Thing is, I like to play the game as close to multiplayer as possible. Of course, there is no tactical combat in multiplayer.

However, I like that I can fiddle with cargo and such more easily in single player mode. It is just 'relaxing' after dealing with the multiplayer aspect. Odd, I know, but there it is.

The other issue, of course, is turn processing time. I also like to be able to walk away and come back to a finished turn. Rather than having to sit in front of the computer for ten minutes and wait for player five to attack me - just so I can then wait for another ten minutes for the turn to finish processing. Very annoying to come back to a game thinking that the turn will be finished processing, only to discover it is only part way done because someone attacked you.

As for complexity, I enjoy having to design tactics and the complexity that adds. I'd rather that than the simplistic combat results that tactical combat can give you - you might as well have an 'auto-win' button.

It seemed to me that 'no tactical combat' would have fit my single player wants nicely.

So, back to the original. What exactly is this 'check' supposed to do? Is it functional? Am I doing something wrong? Does it do something besides what I think it should? Is this a bug? Wassup?

Thanks,
Chad

If you set the game to simultaneous, it will work exactly as a pbw game.

Yeah, I just hate messing with the simultaneous (or multiplayer) cargo transfer issues. I just find it annoying. This seemed like a best case solution for my single player enjoyment. Oh well.

But, is this a bug? Am I just messed up? Or feature not added?

Thanks,
Chad

It's a bug.

In the new patch, there's been a revision of cargo handling orders for simultaneous, try it out.

I don’t know, do you really need to fight every battle? Even in strategic mode battles can take longer than need be (and its pretty much auto-resolve anyway as you have no input). Worse case I had was when they was one of my scouts was continually being attacked by hordes of enemy ships. My ship was faster than all of theirs so would always escape. After 8 times of being attacked I got fed up, so took control in Tactical and purposely destroyed my ship just to get peace of mind!

Also, as games go on and battles become larger do you really want to care about small scale skirmishes? Do you care about the fate of your one population transport ship when you have command of 200 warships fighting a war of life/death elsewhere in the galaxy?
In Medieval Total War 2 when you have bigger things to worry about that what a few units of peasants are doing at the edge of your empire, auto resolve is a great time saver. It is REALLY useful in Mid/End games when micromanagement is no longer required.

I'd welcome its introduction into the SE series, especially for ground combat which is frustrating being 'Tactical only'. It just means my solution is to glass every planet rather than waste 5 minutes of my life being bored/frustrated by SEV5's awful ground combat.
