Problems with video board.

Submitted by HalTheReal on Sun, 2007-11-11 16:20. Space Empires V General

hi guys! Laughing out loud i hope you can help me with this problem, since i can't play anymore to SEV:

some days ago i changed my video board from an ATI (tbh i don't remember the model) to an Nvidia 8600 gt (waaay more powerful the the ATI i had before).

Since this change i can't play SEV anymore Sad the problem is that when i turn the HUD the game starts "lagging" as hell (even if in the firsts 30-45 mins of play the problmen is much less notable, with just some "clicks" every 1-2 secs, it degenerates until the game is totally unplayable), even if the fps are locked to 80-110.

I tried activating the vertical sync, since this strange lag (and i say strange because it's not the lag you espect when you have 10 fps on a game, but it's more likely your screen, while turning, goes 2 steps forward and 1 backward)happens only when turning the screen, and not when zooming in, but i still have this really annoying problem.

I also tried 1024x768 and 1280x1024, windowed mode, every 3d devices in the setup, and safe memory, and every combination of resultion and veritcal sync on/off, but still no results. Sad

I have the latest drivers for the video board, i also tried with an old cathode monitor (i know some LCD monitors have some problems when turning the camera around in games), but with no results.

My specific systems details are: AMD Atholon X2 Dual Core 3800+ 2.00 ghz, 2 gb DDR2, windows XP service pack 2, Nvidia 8600 GT (chispet sparkle) 512 mb.

Thanks in advice for the help, i hope i can figure this out.

Make sure you have the AMD XP Dual Core drivers and optimiser installed for your AMD MB. You can get them from the AMD download site. If that doesn't help, try setting the processor affinity to use only one processor. Open task manager after the game starts, right click on SEV, then select Set Affinity and choose processor one or zero ONLY.

i tried it now; i have installed both optimizer and the latest AMD drivers for my processor, and setted SEV to use just one of the two cores, i have seens no improvements (ATM), sadly, but i have to wait a bit and see if it degenerates once more into an unplayable situation (maybe now it will just "click" once every few seconds)...i'll soon posts again! There has been some reported issues with the newer Nvidia cards. Unfortunately, it's a fix that's required from Nvidia rather than one from SE:V.

I just got a 8600GTS with a Intel P4 and had to drop the resolution down. I have a 20" LCD widescreen monitor and SEV crashes on 1900X1050 but runs fine on lower.

I'm using the standard drivers off nvidia's website (as of whatever version was 2 weeks ago).

Are you changing Resolution thru windows or the nvidia control panel?

I use nvidia's control panel to change my resolution before loading SEV. It may be that i'm on a Pentium machine?? Oh, and I'm using windows XP.

i am changing resolutions by the game's setup, btw i am using modified drivers, but tried yesterday with the original ones and i did not see any change. :S anyway i don't think the processor is the problem, since when i started playing SEV i was using the same machine but with an ATI video board and 1gb less of ram, and the game was running fine.

Click on the nvidia icon on the lower right corner and change the resolution through it.

I have to change it BEFORE I start the game.

tried, but still no changes, i think is a compatibly issue between the video board and/or the drivers and the game. I'll try again with some changes in the drivers; anyway if you have any suggestions just post them here! Laughing out loud
