FAQ - Sticky please

FAQ
Some things that are known and some questions we have (particularly for Beta testers as Aaron is a bit busy to answer at the moment).

Things we know:
1. Patch should be coming out on or around the 16th of October. No I do not know what fixes will be included, but there should be many.
1.1 Patch should include a switch added to settings.txt which should help control combat ending.

2. You can have a maximum of 255 star systems - this is set in settings.txt by
Maximum Number Of Systems := 255
Minimum Number Of Systems Large Quadrant := 255
Maximum Number Of Systems Large Quadrant := 255
When you start the game, select Large Quadrant size.

3. To change the maximum amount of time that space combat will last change (eg to change it to 20 minutes):
Space Combat Maximum Time (Seconds) := 1200
NOTE: This does not mean that combat will last 20 minutes, it means that if you are in combat for the entire 20 minutes with neither side losing, running out of supplies, running away from each other etc - then combat will end once 20 minutes has been reached

4. To change minimum and maximum number of players in a game (eg if you want exactly 15 players)
Minimum Computer Player High Setting := 15
Maximum Computer Player High Setting := 15
then select High for 'Number of Computer Players' in the game setup Empires section.

5. Emergency resupply does not currently appear to work.

6. The savegames do not save the datafiles within them, meaning that if you modify a datafile or a patch modifies a datafile and then you load up an old savegame, you should see the changes.

Things for Kwok (or other beta testers) to answer:
2. Does unmothballing work? I ask because it doesn't for me (ship just sat there for years with the single unmothball order in it's queue).
4. Do any of the beta testers have a FAQ or can they develop an FAQ for what each of the items in settings.txt do?
5. Does anyone know what happens if you have more than 15 empires?

If you have other things to add to this list or can answer some of the questions above, place them in a reply and I will edit this with that information.

A few answers...

Submitted by Captain Kwok on Wed, 2006-10-11 19:52.

1. I'm haven't tried it at this time, but several have mentioned they can't get it to work so I wouldn't be surprised if it hasn't been implemented yet

2. Hmm. I wonder if something has been broken. Was this in Simultaneous or sequential mode?

3. No. Each time the game is loaded the data files are loaded. So changes can be made during the game. In simultaneous mode these will create an error message that the data files do not match - however the host can process the turn with the new files and it will be "updated".

4. Most of the items say what they do already. I suppose some sort of document like the SE:IV modding tutorial will be made eventually.

5. You can probably have more as there are 24 or so unique flags. I said 15 previously because that is how many unique shipsets there are.

2. It is turn based (sequential), same machine, 19 NPC empires + 1 PC empire.
