How exactly does PBW proceed turns ?

Submitted by MistWeaver on Wed, 2007-10-24 19:39. Space Empires V Multiplayer

Hello.

Im just intrested to know how does it work. I mean there is no such thing as "dedicated server" in SE4/5, so how sent saved games get loaded in SE on server and proceded ?

You either download the zipped save file to play the turn and upload the created .plr file with your orders, or you do the same via email instead of http.

It is possible to create a game with TCP/IP mode, for direct connection between players, but it is rather quirky. SE isn't a game well suited to having everyone sit down together for hours to play turns at the same time, especially as the game progresses and time requirements for each turn increase.

No, I did not mean how it works for me. I know that.
I wonder how it works on www.pbw.cc How could admins of that site automatize loading of .plr files from many games into the SE5 application ?

May be Im missing something obvious ?

A lot of Java and JSP code and a database of some sort (I think it's Postgres or maybe MySQL)... I don't know exactly how it works but at the heart of it it's just queueing up a bunch of calls to SE5's command-line turn processing. Geoschmo could answer better than I could, as he's the current maintainer of the PBW code...

You looking to write the next PBW, or just curious? Eye-wink

Thanks for the answer. No, Im not going to create another PBW, but what I want is to use same method in AI testing.
I mean, after modifying one race's AI scripts - put two AI's to fight to test if its became better. But manual end turn pressing would bore me to death, so Im looking a way to automatize the process Smiling

And command line is what I've been looking for. I didnt know that SE supports it. Jeez.. its even documented in Manual, how could I miss it .. Thanks again.

There is also a "runturns" cheat code you can use - you might want to try that for even quicker AI testing Eye-wink
