Very slow cursor

Submitted by SteveA on Sat, 2007-10-20 19:17. Space Empires V General

I've been lurking for a long time now waiting for the game to be patched up enough to be as interesting as SEIV. This most recent patch has promise. But, I cannot get the cursor to respond usably once I get a few layers deep in info windows.

I get about 16 fps on the main screen, about 5 fps when the fleet window is open, but only 1 or 2 fps when I then open up a ship configuration for viewing. It the worst when on the ship components page.

I've tried all the video setting, windowed mode, and tips/hints off but the frame rate is still too painful to use when a couple windows deep.

WinXP, 2000GHz class CPU, no other apps, plenty of memory. Any suggestions?

thanks,....

Steve

If you disable "smooth font edges" in windows, you'll get a lot better frame rates with SE5.

im getting the same slow cursor, but only with Stock. If i use BM, it is smaller, and back to normal speed.

also, disabling smooth edge font only gives me about +4 fps

*edit: according to FRAPS im getting 50fps (limit on my lcd) at the main menu screen when the cursor is lagging.

Try changing the 3D Device in the Setup menu.

Thanks for tips. I've already disabled smooth font edges, and the difference was not detectable. I haven't tried a mod yet, I wanted to run through the basic game once before switching to any of the mods. I've tried each of the 3d device options, again with no effect.

The machine is an off the shelf Compaq Presario running XP home with an AMD 1790MHz CPU and 756M RAM. Not a hot machine, but I thought sufficient to run SE5. The video is a NVidia GeForce FX 5500 built onto the motherboard. I've read about the problems with NVidia 6500+ on Vista, but those comments did not appear to include this setup.

Do you thing the NVidia problem reaches this far back?

I'll check memory and running programs to make sure something isn't hiding in the background dragging the machine down. I would have expected a little better than 16 fps on the main game screen.

[Update] after updating the drivers, the fps went up to 6 or 7 on the components and damage screens when looking at a ship. That is just barely usable. Move the mouse to the area you want, wait for the cursor to stop, then fine adjust it. At 1 fps I would spend 10 seconds overshooting back and forth to even be able to hit a specific icon. At least not a 6 fps I can settle in quickly enough to use it.

What are reasonable fps rates I should expect on this class hardware?

thanks...

What's your video resolution? Anything higher than 1024x768 is crap performance-wise, since the system is in the background if you open the research menu or any other, but still takes enourmous processing power (for nothing).

After updating video drivers I was back on 1280x1024. Switched to 1024x768 and got the frame rate to 8 fps. Turns out the lower resolution may be better for my old eyes anyway when looking at the ship components.

I wonder if setting this value in the Settings.txt file higher would help:

Game Time Rate Modifier := 1.0

...maybe try setting it to 2.0 or 3.0?

I think it controls how fast the planets and such on the screen rotate.

i dont think that is the problem...

The easiest solution is to just use the Balance mod! There is no mouse lag after loading this mod for some reason. I have tried copy/pasting the mouse bmp from BM into stock, but that didnt fix the lagging mouse in stock either.
