Personal notes on 1.58

Submitted by Helker on Thu, 2007-10-11 19:36. Space Empires V General

Here are my 2 cents on this new release while I am starting a brand new game Smiling

- During the Empire Creation on the Technology Panel, the ### Planet Colonization should be at level 1 in the planet type chosen. Otherwise, when reloading the empire from a saved files, it will mess-up with the technology points available...

- The little help window should close itself after a couple of seconds; if it stays open indefinitely, it is quite annoying...

- In the Ship Design Windows, it would be nice to be able to move the components to a different level without having to remove the component, and re-adding it (I mean: click on the component, click on the desired level, click where you want to put it)

- In the Ship Design View, when you select the ship Design Type, it would be very nice to have a text box to insert custom Design Types (Which should be saved with the empire file) Same thing for similar "Type" selections (Units, Colonies, etc etc)

More to come during the game Smiling

- It would be nice to add/remove items in a stack in the construction queues. For example, if I put a group of 10 Research Compounds, i would like to add or remove RC from that same group without having to delete the entire group and recreate it (and eventually move it within the queue to put it in the same place)

- Ships still use unknown warp points to reach the destination. Here is a Screenshot. In this specific case I gave the order to colonize a planet, and between the systems there is an uncharted system.

God, yes, that's annoyed me since the game came out.

The game still has a long way to go, but it is getting better.
While there has been progress in this area there's still too many hard-coded limitations preventing implementation of some modding concepts and ideas.

This game does not have a LONG WAY to go. If you think it does even at this point, you will never EVER be happy. It will never get where you want it.

So for the love of god, play something else that's perfect.

First of all don't cop an attitude and tell me to play something different just for expressing an opinion that differs from yours. Its unnecessary and makes us all (fans of the series) look bad.

As for the game still having a long way to go, I'm looking at it from the point of view of what was implied the game would be way back when MM annouced he was going to start working on it. Now, will the game ever get to that wonderously intangible point? Of course not.

But it gets closer with every patch! Laughing out loud

Saving a game causes game to crash out with an"unable to open blah blah temp_1.dat then read error blah blah blah. Is this a new bug or one that I never encountered before because I never save a game because the screen flickered so much that saving seemed pointless. I would appreciate a constructive helpful reply rather than some sarcastic bastard saying "It never happens to me" or some equally useless response. Thank you for listening; I envy those that have the perfect gaming experience .Vista 2GB Dual core 2.oMhz nVidia 8600 . Please dont tell me the computer isn't up to the demands of SEV; all other games I ply run fine Oblivion, Doom 3 CIVIV plus expansions, nexus, GalCiv ie some old, some not so old.

Seems that the game needs to be installed on the same partition as the OS; at least I can save a game without crashing if I do this. I think I have had enough.

The patch works just fine with the EU-Version. I didn't try the german installation, but there is no problem with the english, so I think it should work, too.

What exactly was "implied" that we haven't gotten?

From my point of view the only thing that's missing is a decent 2D system view.

This is a known bad combination for SE5 (Vista + Nvidia). The Nvidia drivers and the DX10 engine don't support DX8 games very well (all those you listed are DX9), and cause many issues with lots of DX8 games. SE5 is one such DX8 game. There isn't anything Malfador can change in the SE5 code to fix the issue, sadly. Even with all display code disabled, leaving just a basic frame refresh method active, the flicker remains. The onus is on Nvidia (and/or Microsoft) to improve DX8 compatibility.

Note that if you play in windowed mode, there is no flicker, and the game is quite playable. In Data\Hudsettings.txt, you can now (as of 1.58) change the resolution for windowed mode, to make more use of a larger desktop resolution than 1024x768.

I had the same flicker problem and i had 7600 card. I change it for a 7950 and havn't had the problem any more. My firend PC also has 7600 and he has the same problem. Try getting an older 7900 or upgrade to 8700-8800 if you got the bucks.

Thankyou java(shit?)slinger for another useless comment.

@fyron
Thanks for the info fyron. I moved my installation onto the same partition as Vista; that fixed the save game problem. I had already found the fix for the flicker and setting the window size in hudsetting.txt, so at the moment all is looking good. Runs on my HP Pav dv9518TX Notebook nVidia 8600M GS with drivers dated Aug 30th in windowed mode at 1440x900 (actually 1435x885 so as i can keep my task bar visible with out loosing SEV real estate) on 17" monitor.

Let's continue:

- I had a planet listed under "colonizable and empty". I tried to select it and then click on the "Send Colonizer" Button, but it did not send the ship. I sent one manually, and I found that the planet was colonized by another empire. I think that the "Send Colonizer" button should have sent the ship anyway since I did not have any knowledge of it being colonized...

- Under the Construction Queues window, I believe that the following buttons would be very useful:
* Select All
* Select None
* Select Empty Queues

i get this error message:
"Your SE5 Version does not match an older version required by this patch. Please reinstall SE5 and then attempt to install the patch."
as is said i have the german retail version (v1.30) but reinstalled with english language (had german language first). even patch v1.33 wich "applies to any retail version of Space Empires 5" causes this error. so what should i do?

The patch only works with the US retail version i thin. Even if you have an EU version and choose english language, you still have EU version and not the US retail.

Best regards,

- Intelligence projects are way overpowered. You can cripple an Empire with just intelligence projects. I believe that espionage project should take at lease 2-3 turns to complete, while sabotage project at least double that time, depending on the difficulty of the espionage/sabotage.
