Cowardly fleets and other ships

Submitted by Phyco126 on Tue, 2007-10-09 11:44. Space Empires V FAQs

Unacceptable! Commander, execute those who ran from the battle immediately! I don't care if it was the entire fleet!

*ahem* Sorry you had to hear that, but I've been having some issues with my ships and it is starting to get annoying. I have found that my fleets will do one of 3 things.

1. Once the battle starts, it will immediately turn around and retreat.
2. After the battle starts and they actually attacked the enemy, if one ship recieves damage, even if it wasn't that great (say, 5% to armor) the ENTIRE fleet will turn around and retreat. I have lost several ships after my fleet of 12 ships attacked a far inferior single ship, but because they kept running, and I would turn them around and order them to attack, and they turn around then turn around again and run... again, the other ship follows and deals far more damage than it normally would. Aggravating to say the least.
3. If ordered to attack a planet, they will fly half way to the planet, turn around, then retreat half way there. Or sometimes they get near the planet, and sit there while satellites attack them. In tactical mode, I can't even get them to target the satellites, much less the planet.

Now, when I disband the fleet and tell ALL of the same ships to attack at the same time, they will actually go and blew up everything I tell them to, whether in tactical or strategic. Especially in Strategic Mode x32. Fun watching 15 satellites dissapear in a matter of about 2 seconds. Bwa hahahaha.

Now everytime the fleet runs, it wastes time, supplies, and movement.

Now, the second problem is my repair ships. They are unarmed, soley there to repair my warp point blockade ships. They run too, which after a while they actually make it out of the hex, wasteing a turn for repair and forcing me to manually move the ships back onto that hex.

Is there a way to tell my fleet to quick being pathetic dogs and fight like proud and honorable warriors? Is there a command to tell specific unarmed ships to stay put in a fight and if they should die, then so be it?

If this problem is not fixed soon, well, his Lordship will soon be offering me a position in which I will be introduced to the firey gates of Aggotol...

(Base game with patch 1.4x [.45 or something] is the one I use, no mods)

I suspect the leader's not well armed, or maybe not armed at all. Until the next patch, leader role defaults to the oldest ship in the TF, so it's a chore to get a good leader sometimes.

Non-combatant ships should be split off into another TF, as should troop transports (armed or not).

And don't use Arrowhead as a TF formation (except for "Don't get Hurt TFs). It overexposes the lead ship.

Let me know how this works for you. I left out a few things in order to be brief.

Thank you very much, I will try that next time I play. The bad thing about a game this great, is that there isn't enough time to play it thoroughly. I'm still (obviously) learning things, how things work, better tactics, riots...
