2 questions about races (armor & atmosphere) |
I noticed the races do not have equivalent ship designs. The ship style I'm using right now (the green bulbous one) has 3 armor squares per deck. The last one I used (the pointy green one) had 8 armors per deck. That's quite a difference. And they were a lot bigger with more I and O squares too.
So, which race has the best ships? There's only 14 ship styles so I'll eventually try them all.
The other question is, when picking rock/ice/gas and oxygen/methane/co2/hydrogen/none, are they distributed evenly throughout the quadrant, or are some types less common than others (is there such thing as a gas giant with no atmosphere?)

I noticed the difference in ship styles, too. Does it mean every player in MP plays with the same (=the best) ship style) Or is the ship style balanced? (More Armor, but less I/O Slots)????
Atm i use the tiny blue ships, which look quite nice, but only have 3 Slots Armor per deck.

One nice solution is to set the slot override setting in the mod definition file to TRUE, so all empires use the same rectangular layout.. its a shame this was never set to TRUE for the stock game.
Of course, in stock, all the smaller layouts really do is prevent you from making a ship that is 95% armor components. Even with the smallest layouts, there is usually enough space.

On Dreadnoughts an baseships I rarely have enough space for the amount of armor I want to use. I suggested he add Large and Massive versions of the armors, like Star Fury uses, but I don't know if he'll do it.

Is there any info about the layout of the ships and different ship designs? I don't want to reaserch all ship designs and look the difference between FF-FF, DD-DD and so on.

If you play balance mod with directional damage then the layouts matter even more.

Directional damage is only a factor for inner and outer hull components in the Balance Mod, which is the same as stock. You might be thinking of SuicideJunkie's Gritty Galaxy mod, which does have directional damage for armor as well.

gas giant with no atmosphere does not exist, in any size (tiny-hugh). I have noticed that the atmospheres tend to clump near races that breathe that atmosphere. There are other planets with other atmospheres but not as many. When I watch carefully, I can tell the atmosphere of the next race I'll find by closely watching the atmosphere type majority in nearby systems. I'll see a disproportionately large number of a certain kind of atmosphere in a cluster of stars, and the next race I meet will breath that one.
I actually created a race using the atmosphere:none. Unfortunately, the small/tiny, rock/ice planets are usually the ones without any atmosphere.
