Question re: dead ships

Submitted by emcgman on Sun, 2007-09-30 08:51. Space Empires V General

Ok, I have some dead ships where engines, etc are 100% damaged so they can not move. (zero movement points)

But the game won't let me scrap them because they are not at a spaceyard. These are smaller ships that I didn't want to use up hull points with repair bays.

How do I get these ships to a space yard for scrapping.

I figure if I have to, I can build a base in the same hex, but I'm looking for a less expensive way to do it.

Can I tow them with tractor beams (preparing to research soon).

Or any other methods of towing, transporting.

Thanks,

emcgman

You could always send out a repair ship if you have one to fix up the ship rather than scrapping it.

However, another combat ship in the same sector can destroy the hulk using the "Fire On" order. If you can't get back to a SY in a couple of turns, you'll end up paying more maintenance then you'd get from scrapping the ship.

A few methods to get rid of em...

1. Since you seem to have repair tech, send a ship with a repair bay to the same hex and repair the engines enough to send them to a spaceyard.
2. If you have medium transport researched, build a spaceyard ship and move it to the same hex. Then you can scrap it or repair it.
3. Since the scrap value is generally minor, you could move a ship with weapons into the same hex and select the damaged ship and select 'fire on' to destroy the crippled ship.

As far as I know you can't tow ship across systems.

Maybe you can gift the dead ships to an A.I. empire.

Ship's crew? You're talking about a game where one can routinely space entire planetary populations without repercussions, just to clear the dome from a colony.

You forgot the self destruct option. If you added a self destruct device to the ship, and it isn't damaged, you can select self destruct, and it will explode, removing the problem. It may require a movement point to work.

Spacing your population?! Are you crazy?!

You should SCRAP them instead. You get organics that way!

Scrap people for organics?
That 'concept' has been around... well, a few decades at least, since at least the release of an old movie called Soylent Green.

Dealing with overpopulation and food shortages at the same time... without the populace even knowing about it...

Not only getting something back, but you will also make the AI pay maintenance for it. It's like the insult that keeps on insulting... Sticking out tongue
