I will wait until tomorrow
I will wait until tomorrow before I make a commite about this.

You should do Direct2Drive
That's where I bought SEIV, and it went quite nicely.
And they don't require you to be online and running someone else's resource-hogging app while you play.
Steam Dangerous!
If Steam sucked any harder it would implode. I got a legit boxed copy of HL2 and 1. they refused to recognize it. 2. There is no way to contact a living person there. 3. They accused me of trying to register a hacked copy, through their form letter emails. I now believe that the store that sold it to me (over Amazon.com) had broken it open and used the registration code, then reboxed it and sent it to me. Once Steam has your money you lose al your rights! Beware! The slightest thing goes wrong and you lose it all.

Danger Will Robinson! Danger! Danger!
That would seem to indicate to me that the amazon seller you bought the game from is dangerous, and not steam. I dunno; perhaps I missed the logic train.
Steam? What is it?
I'm sitting in Tyumen, Russia and was going to buy a downloadable copy of SE4D, as the copy on my laptop has suffered in a nasty crash. The store I was directed to (something like 'Direct2U'? I don't remember.) required that I install something called 'steam' before it would allow me to purchase.
Ummm, how can I put this...? NO.
All I wanted was to sent them money and download a copy of the game. I don't want an 'interactive experience' or whatever else it is that 'steam' gives me. I just want the game! Aargh! never mind. Home in a week or so, I'll just reload from CD.
Pre-Order?
Why is it a pre-order when the game's been out for about a week now? I had no problems picking up a copy here in little old New Zealand.
The official release date is the 16th.
EB Games has just been releasing it as they get it, instead of the usual process of holding it until the reelase date.
Narratio: Steam is actually better than DirectToDrive. You do need to install it and setup an account to download things, but past that it works fine (I don't buy much from it for the same reason I don't do D2D- if the company running it goes under, POOF go your games).

Digital distribution is meh.
Digital distribution is meh. I bought Galactic Civilizations II as a download from Stardock's service, and while everything worked just fine, it just doesnt feel like same as having a physical copy of the game. Perhaps I'm just old fashioned but I want a box that I can put to my shelf and a manual that I can hold in my hands and read where-ever I want. I'm not very optimistic about SE5's availability in the northern Europe, but there is no way I'm going to touch services like Steam or D2D even with a ten foot stick, even if it means ordering the game from the other side of the world.
The advantage of digital
The advantage of digital distribution is that if you don't need to worry about loosing/damaging the physical disk. Just don't loose your account details.
However only Steam seems to have got it right. I reinstalled my pc and installed steam and then just re-downloaded all the games I've bought on in, I didn't need to dig around for the CD's and because they've got proof of purchase they install without needing to re-register or anything.

Well, I was all excited
Well, I was all excited about the long awaited release of SE5 ... now I'm less than thrilled.
I'll browse through the news in a while to see if it's mentioned anywhere but does anyone know if there'll be a 'proper', tangible, release of the game?
Like others, I want a physical copy of the game on hand, not a non-physical example that not only do I have to pay to buy but also pay to download!
If there is no 'boxed' release then I'm sorry, Aaron, but I'm not buying SE5 (despite the fact that it's one of the games I've been most looking forward to).

I had to order mine from EB
I had to order mine from EB online yesterday. I paid the extra 10 bucks for overnight shipping. I checked its status this morning and saw this message.
Your package is on time with a scheduled delivery date of 10/11/2006. WHOOT!
There is a boxed copy

Well I went and picked up my preorder from the one of the local EBgames yesterday so there is a boxed copy available.
Many thanks for that data,
Many thanks for that data, SirKid .
I had a quick Google of EB Games and saw a reassuringly physical 'box' for sale
.
Much mollified, I can go back to eagerly anticipating buying a copy of the latest version of the most engrossing Sci-Fi strategy game there is (I'm sure Aaron will sleep much better knowing that ROFL).
EDIT: Thanks also to Grumble for the additional assurances :salute:.

The (now official?) Space Empires 4 Mod Launcher V2.26

Ordered
Thanks for the tip! At least now I'll have something to play while waiting, but I hope that it doesnt take ages for them to ship it here. I'm not optimistic enough to think that I would get it during next week.
Space Empires IV Delux FREE with at least some SE V CD's
Alot of merchants are advertising that you get SE IV delux with SE V as a special promotion they're offering. I just wanted to let everyone know that the boxed copy of SE V I picked up from EB games yesterday had SE IV delux included on the same CD as SE V. You install the two simultaneously if you want to.
The install went perfectly for me... less hickups than the demo. It also played well, although I haven't had a chance to determine which demo bugs are still present. I eagerly await the balance mod and patch. Many thanks to Captain Kwok for developing that mod. I like the changes he's mentioned so much I think I'll always want to use the modded version of the game. I'm looking forward to trying it out.

The goggles... they do nothing!
I walked into my local EB
I walked into my local EB store and bought the box right off the shelf. Yhis company is just trying to get people to order from them by using gimics.
Your local EB
Actually had copies? There's none within a 100 mile radius of me.

SE IV Deluxe is bundled?
That is just foolish. The hard-core SE fans will ignore it, we want the NEW version as I have played SEIV for years now and want to move on.
...And the new players will get to see all the wonderful ideas about user interface and simplicity in SEIV that were LEFT OUT

Still Steamed
I may have been too telegraphic about Steam. I believe that I was sold stolen (hacked) goods by the Amazon.com shop. This is the original problem. I also got "Steam Cleaned" by the Steam guys. It seems that if anything goes wrong during the Steam activation you are viewed as a criminal by Steam. I made twenty or more attempts to email a human there to try to understand why they were treating me like a crimiinal. All I got back were boilerplate form letters or references to irrelevant FAQs about my supposed criminality. So: They have all the cards and all your money. You have no say in anything. They have no reason to treat you other than as a sucker to be skinned. If anyone wants to do business with Steam on that basis be my guest!
As counter point to the
As counter point to the "Beware they'll steal from you" posts I thought I'd just pop in and say steam is brilliant, never had any issues except one and that is they won't let me buy anything without contacting them first, super security for me for some reason, not that I mind, they respond to the emails in a day usually.
Steamed
OK, well it makes sense that Steam would have shills monitoring this list. Have a nice day.
Shill? I wish. I'd be
Shill? I wish. I'd be getting paid if that was the case.
Google:"Steam Sucks" x13,000
I just put this into Google and got 13,000 hits. I read a few. Many seem to be threads on various boards complaining about the same negative/criminal treatment I got. I am far from an isolated case. Steam Sucks. Sorry.
16
today is 16, but i can`t download game from steam. why?

Time Zones
Steam isn't in your time zone at a guess -- as I type, its 22:08 by my computers clock, on the 15th.
There are 10 types of people in the world:

I think it's released on
I think it's released on Valve's schedule, in their timezone, and they're located in California I believe. Releasing it by local timezone doesn't make much sense.
So very close
Ok, it has moved from the 'Coming soon to steam' box to the 'new on steam' box, on steam's home page. but i still cant download
It
3 years i've been waiting, why must the last few hours be the hardest?
i feel you pain i was hoping
i feel you pain i was hoping to wake up this morning and get it started so when i come home from work i could play
its 0812 est and i still can't download it ;(
yeah, i got up at 4 here and
yeah, i got up at 4 here and was like 'well goodie, 3 hours til class' and no patch. Really just want to punch a baby.
Yeah the my games section of
Yeah the my games section of steam still says "not yet release". Figured it would be out by now since it is the 16th.

I checked Steam again a
I checked Steam again a couple of minutes ago, and on my account the game is mentioned as not released yet. On the site is stated as new release. I tried installing from the game page link but I get sever busy error!

Come on!
Its not even 7 oclock yet guys -- and if steam really is based on West Coast, I bet it won't be out for at least another two hours so they can have technicians ready to deal with any hiccups.
There are 10 types of people in the world:

logically
yeah, so heres what i'm saying.
Unless the patch was worked on all weekend, i'm pretty sure it was just about finished by friday. so why not release it friday? well because release date is monday. That makes sense.
however, i still think the game could be released at midnight monday morning. Because logically the game should have been finished all weekend and since i've had a copy for a week, i imagine sooner. so most likely they were waiting so it could be sent with the patch or when the patch was available. however, i'm pretty sure steam has gotten used to releasing games online and should be able to handle a release at midnight by now.
Then again, if they spent all weekend playtesting the patch, i could see their hesitation to get that last little bit fixed.
but come on rilbur, you know you're online waiting for the patch too, its ok to get antsy

I gotta work all day
I gotta work all day, and when I get home I have a guild raid in WoW to do.
I don't get to play untill tomorrow at best anyway, so I can afford to be patient
Besides, you don't know that Aaron hasn't been working on the patch over the weekend (doubtful)! I figure they're releasing on monday because A) its the original release date; and B) this way they can be "on hand" for a few days in case anything turns out horribly, horribly wrong.
There are 10 types of people in the world:
Those that understand binary, and those that don't.
well lets quit pacing ourselves
O i kinow, i'm saying why not midnight monday like the typical release of games and gaming platforms into our rabid hands. Anyone remember Xbox or 360 or PS2? yeah. I still think midnight this morning would have been ideal atleast for steam release. its hard to believe steam, who would have the easiest time releasing products at midnight compared to department stores, would be able to do it. But o well, i got the game, i just want the darn patch.

Still can't get it
It's 3:29 on the East Coast right now and it's still not available. Defcon was ready by the time I woke up on its release date, as were all the other games I've purchased on Steam. I've never had to wait at all, let alone 15 hours...
-----
With all these people, you would expect one of them to carry an iguana around...
Defcon
Defcon didn't work for quite a while for most people, so I'm not sure what you're remembering there.
It was released at 6 PM GMT, which makes sense as Introvision is based in the UK. I have a feeling you'll be seeing SEV reliably around 6PM EST.
I have *never* had a Steam game work properly on release day..

Can we swap Star Fury for something else???
The ordering page says we get Star Fury for free. I already own it, any chance of getting a copy of something else? Maybe Galactic Civilizations?
