SE:V v1.54 History

Captain Kwok's picture
Submitted by Captain Kwok on Fri, 2007-09-21 16:42. Space Empires V General

The latest beta history log. A nice addition with the remembering of colonies...

---

Version 1.54:
1. Fixed - The default AI strategy file had some extra text which was causing an error.
2. Fixed - Sometimes panels on the TCP/IP Host window were not in the correct positions.
3. Fixed - Sometimes text on the Treaty Elements window would not wrap correctly.
4. Fixed - Sometimes multiple identical alliances were created.
5. Fixed - In the Alliance Window, the Propose Message and Add Member would often give a blank window.
6. Fixed - You cannot start a ground combat unless a planet has been selected.
7. Changed - Cheat Codes are now off by default if you use the Game Setup window. If you start a Tutorial
or Quick Start game, the cheat codes are on.
8. Fixed - Sys_Get_System_Queues_Ability_Facility_Count and Sys_Get_System_Queues_Specific_Facility_Count were not
working correctly.
9. Added - Limited Sight Memory for planets. If you see a planet with a colony on it, then when that planet is no
longer in current sight it will show the last empire's flag you saw there. The flag will be darkened in
the Main window and darkened on reports and on the Planets window.

I'm not sure when MM plans on putting out the patch. I'd assume it's getting pretty close though - I can imagine how tough it would be to wait, there's a lot of nice items between v1.44 and v1.54!

Nice update.
I like 9 the most, and 3-5 also look interesting.

I got a little patience left as far as waiting for the next patch to be released.

If a 1.55 change log/history shows up on the forums, and an official patch isn't released soon after, then I will start to whine and complain and if no patch happens at that time then I probably just sulk and ignore SE V while depressed and then go back to SE IV...
(I got a Mega Evil Empire image to uphold in SE IV, the "Eee" shall become the "Eeek!"...)

I had given up on any remembered sight, then Aaron gives us #9! I believe this is the first time any sight of this kind has been in a Space Empires game.

Also... bring out the patch! Bring out the patch! *gathers countrymen together, whom all summon up pitchforks and torches out of nowhere*

So does that mean that the planet won't show up in a 'Colonizable and Empty' list now if you've seen it with a colony on it?

THANKYOU! Now I can try to make time to start playing Space Empires V again! Maybe after another game of Civilization IV Beyond the Sword.

There are a few more items in my wish list for an update/patch that I'll post again another time; but this was one of the main items. Thankyou!

So when do we get to purchase an expansion that incorporates a version of space travel like Faster Than Light/Warp along with the warp points and much improved AI and many other items later? Huh? Please? I'll also post them later again. Many of us have posted our wishes. Thankyou for reading and caring! We continue to support Malfador Machinations (Aaron) for the continued commitment to OUR beloved game/hobby. Even us "lurkers" are still watching, playing, and waiting. Thankyou!

"1. Fixed - The default AI strategy file had some extra text which was causing an error."

This sounds like a focus in the AI improvement might be starting. Please and thankyou!

I think #7 should apply especially on Quick Start and Tutorial games. Because for newbies, it's confusing when you accidentally hit ~ and none of your key presses work any more. Since you didn't hit ~ on purpose, you don't know you need to hit ~ to stop. You might not even notice the letters appearing in the lower left corner when you type because they're in a small, dark red font.

Wow! If Aaron's still trying to fix alliances after that savegame I sent, he ain't afraid to tackle nothin'.

I suspect #1's going to help a bit, particularly with the 1.53 fixes.

They'll need to do something special the day this patch is released, like make the background of the entire forum "glow" by continually changing colors. There should be no chances taken that someone might lose precious minutes before getting patched up.

I hope the popular #9 will get an equivalent for the AI's but I think we're all happy to see it in any form.

Just watch me be out of town when the big day finally comes. Murphy's Law. Maybe I'll do you all a favor and leave early.

Due to the vastly different mechanics necessary to accommodate such travel, my guess would be never. A more feasible solution would be to introduce (moddable) transit times for WPs. Base it on move points so faster engines still help. Best would be a formula based approach, so it could be based on the distance between the two systems on the quadrant map, or just make it the same travel distance between all systems if you like (eg: for stock, a constant 1 for the formula).

Yeah, it's a big deal for some.
Even I consider it a big deal.
"Drushocka controlled system" or "Drushocka colony/colonies here" in the system notes just isn't very informative at times.
Even if I tried to take down more detailed notes, I can get absent minded in the monotony of sending ships here and there and would probably forget to note down which planets had whose colonies with whatever population/stuff on them.

Even if I did make the notes, they wouldn't help if I forgot to check them, and seeing an empire flag o some planet in the middile of nowhere would remind me to check the system notes to see what I did remember to write down.

It also helps give a basis of a quick and easy way of estimating enemy expansion if you know where they have colonized already without having to look through the notes of each system seperately.

I'm glad this functionality is being added, but honestly, I'm a little surprised that some folks have labeled this a "shelve it" issue.

In any event, though, a short term workaround is to mark a known colony planet as a minefield. Imperfect, but it's at least a reminder that can be used in conjunction with the system notes.

I made such a 'back to SE IV' comment myself, but I was refering to a new patch in general, with all of the fixes made after 1.44.
#9 alone wouldn't cause me to put up SE V in favor of SE IV.

TCP/IP might have been fixed. There was an item back on 1.47 (I think, could be 1.48) that addressed files failing to be transferred in MP when the host hadn't completed their turn. Nobody seemed to notice or comment on it besides me, though.

I hadn't noticed that, but I was thinking more along the lines of making it more intuitive. I have yet to get a game that can connect without the use of hamachi. And it seemed that the host was dedicated, rather than listen, and so can't play. Am I right about this?

When should the host make his empire, then? When the players make their empires, the host has that option greyed out. Is it after you start the game that the host is given the opportunity, or does he create his during game setup?

I like the #9 feature too, and rditto48801 summed it up best. However, will the next patch be playable or will it be like 1.44 from 1.35? Then if so, will an "easy fix" be withheld when an "access violation" error gets fixed, like it currently is? Its kind of crappy to me. So, when others have said "back to IV" until fixed, I can see why.

Since there are some big changes coming with the next patch perhaps when the next "access violation" error gets fixed, a patch to fix it should be released right away, otherwise its "back to IV".
