Up towards the top of the Stellar Manipulation tech tree is warp point opening/closing. It doesn't make much sense to start a No Warp Point game unless you also start with full tech.

or just change the availability level for opening and closing warp points.

It would hamper the AI since I don't think the AI is currently programmed to use warp point stellar manipulations at this point.

It'd be annoying as H--L. Seriously has anyone ever tried to open warp points to unexplored systems? It's a pain. It's hard to figure out what system is where since the only data is distance from current system. To do it efficiently you've gott use triangulation to figure everything out. that requires writing down a datatable on paper, then doing the actual triangulation to plot the locations before deciding where to make the warp go to. ANNOYING!!! although if you had an option that gave to name/locations without showing contents it might be fun.

Eh ... just write down the names of known systems. Then open a warp point to an unknown system.

Or be an ancient race, or I think there is an option where everyone has seen everything, so basically it would be like being an ancient race but not spending the points that way

Wormhole closing is at level 30, and opening is at 35.

I've played a game with no warp points and no starting tech, and I've found a couple things about it.

First, the computer isn't made for that type of game. The computer won't research stellar manipulation or research, which allows you to spend as much time as you want building up your research and stellar manipulation, then do a number of tactics to make yourself invincible. In addition, I have yet to find a computer build a gravitational defense.

Second, the game isn't made for this type of game, as it allows players to become "untouchable." When I play a no warp point game, I use a strategy of opening one warp point outside my home system, then exploring the other system, closing that warp point, putting a Gravitational defense system in my home system, and basically putting as many gravitational defense systems in every system I possibly can, locking those systems for permanent control. Once a gravitational defense is created and the warp points to that system closed, that system is untouchable, and you can never actually be defeated.

By playing your cards right, you can ensure that each player can never actually leave their home system, even if you attack them. Warp point opening and closing can be done in the same turn, meaning you can open a warp point, send 200 ships into an enemy system, and close the warp point again, ensuring that your enemy won't attack you.

Also, taking control of a single planet in an enemy system proves even more advantageous in this game form because you can build your own gravitational defense, isolating that player for eternity until you eventually decide to blow up the system or kill that player.

Oh yeah, that reminds me. No warp point games makes suicidal nebula creator frigates insanely powerful!

not terribly surprised that the AI is unable to compensate. As for the rest, if you were playing with other people it is likely that they would strive to accomplish the same goal... the only change would be a races ability to research and the individual players strategy for developing research. Most likely a stalemate would occur...

Aren't you blocking your own resource generation by closing all the warp points in a system? Or do the space ports magically transport everything for your use? Smiling

Its amazing how fast the hidden resource transport ships travel, isn't it?

It's interesting to see I'm not the only person who uses triangulation to choose warp point targets. I also had scouts to determine general information about my enemy so I could figure out what areas appeared important. Out of about 7 attempts I only opened a warp point in the wrong direction once.

No warp points gain you the ability to direct the Great War, where fighters, frigates and other battleships are unusable... For the other hand you got powerfull nebula creators and the defences against them... You have to scan at great level... and hide you own ships... Use intelligence and others... I mean, It's like the superweapons suck as Nuclear weapon in our time... Ofcourse there are tanks, soldiers and planes... but when the nuclear weapon comes - they all became useless.. And ofcourse the countries trying to forbid such a horrible weapon...

When you start no warp points game with all tech - the same thing appears... When you start no warp game without the all tech - it's look like some kind of excursion in the basics of the game, or the sandbox game... Space Empire tycoon)
