hows the game right now?

Submitted by vorius on Fri, 2007-09-14 18:50. Space Empires V General

hey guys, have not played the game in several months. Have there been notable improvements to make it more fun/challenging?

I remember it used to be too easy- the AI was mostly asleep. And there were some minor annoyances like the inability to upgrade units (satellites/fighters/etc..)

Did any of that change for the better?

thanks!

read the posts. The game is very playable, try some mods. Currently I'm uning the unnamed mod, kind of getting my head handed to me.

SEV, more than a feeling.

A mod is a must, Unnamed just changes the AI, Balance Mod changes the AI and gameplay. Still cant upgrade units. Game is fun and it works. See post for changelog 1.53 to see next patch details. Current version is 1.44.

With the balance mod the gameplay is great. The thing that stops me playing for any length of time is how slow the game is,from the turn processing speeds to even clicking menus is soooo slow.

Whenever the next patch is released the game will become quite impressive. There are 9 beta patches which have added wonderful new changes to the game. The public release, hopefully soon, is much anticipated.

Even as it is now, at patch 1.44, the game is very much playable, enjoyable, and immensely fun.

Hi vorious. I also hadn't played in awhile, but having just gotten the latest patch and using balance mod, I was happily surprised at the improvement. While it is still missing that little something that made SEIV so great, its now quite addicting. In fact I just bought 2 more copies to give to friends (found a good deal on Amazon) and I am looking forward to some excellent campaigns! If you haven't played in awhile, give it a try!

Until the alliance system is fixed the game will always be seriously hindered in my view.

Also, my last 3 games ended in unfixable glitches - in the first two the game crashed after many hours of gameplay, forcing me to either load an old saved game or give up, i chose the latter cos replaying all those turns would just be even more frustrating. my most recent game ended today when the computer turn froze on player 8, the green bar just wouldnt move, so i had to close it down, forcing me to give up again. and no i cant just save game more often, you shouldnt have to back yourself up against the game glitching on you like that, thats not what i paid good money for. why cant they just write an autosave feature in?

anyway, im shelving the game until it becomes more reliable.

There is an autosave feature in the options menu.

It is my understanding that a great deal of the remaining crash bugs are 'cured' in the beta patches. I sent a PBW game to MM that would not process and he ran it with the beta where it processed fine.

Thanks,

How about one more?

Groovy baby Yeah!

The game is quite groovy right now and should get noticeably groovier with the next patch. I too waited a while before coming back to the game...and it has improved greatly. There are still some broken "features" that I'm waiting on...but most of the major bugs are dead/dying. Slowness is still a bit of a problem...always will be...but it is faster than it used to be.

The game with 1.44 and BM 1.09 is very much playable and it can only get better!

Loving the unnamed mod.

Always loved the Balance mod.

Either one has decent AI that can actually whip you.
