Correct me if I'm wrong: Warp points - sizes

Submitted by javaslinger on Wed, 2007-08-29 13:32. Space Empires V General

So I understand there is a descriptor available for warp points that designates their size. But as I understand it, it does nothing functionally. It was a planned feature, but never implemented.

Is this correct?

It seems to me that this would be rather simple to do. Small warp points only allow small ships, etc, etc... Just a little check prior to warp.

I also believe that this would add much to the game in the sense of designing maps or scenarios as it would create choke points, backdoors, etc, etc....

Perhaps new advanced techs could be created which would allow 'larger ships' to slip through smaller warp points or tech that could shring or enlarge warp points.

I've just always wondered why this feature has not been implemented? Or perhaps I'm wrong and it was never even planned.

The one downside I can think of would be that it would be much more difficult to 'balance' maps...

It could be implemented as a setting in game setup or in settings.txt etc.

Are you saying that it could be modded into the game at present or are you saying that Aaron would have to implement it first? Sorry, I'm thick...

Thanks,

MM would need to implement it first and adding it as an option in settings.txt or as a game setup option would allow players to use it or not - alleviates issues with balance and PBW etc.

Aaron would have to implement some hard code for it to be workable.

The stock game is definitely not an appropriate venue for such size-based warp transit restrictions. It would be nice to have it available for modders though.

I'm pretty certain that I've had large ships damaged by going through small warp points. One of my ships actually got destroyed; damage from the warp point knocked out most of its engines, and there was a black hole system on the other side...

That has nothing to do with the ship size, and everything to do with the "Warp Point - Turbulence" ability. It is an equal-opportunity effect, indiscriminate in the damage it causes.

If Aaron implemented this he should also write code to make warp points that work differently show up differently on the mini-map. When you look at the mini-map for choke points, it's important to know that this warp point is a bottleneck that only lets frigates through.

I thought it was the black hole that was damaging my ships going through the warp point -- I guess the game must associate the two because I was getting warp point damage on the way in and on the way out the other side.

In the stock game, black hole systems are set to use unusual warp points, regular systems are set to use normal (ability-less) warp points.
