SE5 - Slow / jaggy mouse cursor |
Hi!
The subject actually says it all: The mouse cursor works smoothly when in the System display but lags terribly whenever I open any windows (e.g. that tiny Tutorial window, the Empire Overview etc.). Technically it's not unplayable but annoying to no end
Did anyone experience the same problem and found a solution?
I use Windows Vista, my graphic adapter is a Nvidia 7800 gtx. All drivers are up to date, the latest SE5 patch has been applied.
Thankyou very much!
Re: SE5 - Slow / jaggy mouse cursor
In my own personal experience, mouse lag is caused by having the wrong 3d device selected in the Setup menu.
Re: SE5 - Slow / jaggy mouse cursor
Nvidia Vista drivers and SE5 do not a good cocktail make.
There isn't really anything you can do to fix this, other than running in windowed mode. Make sure to send an email to Malfador (se5 at malfador dot com) with a system report and such, so they know there is yet another player having trouble with Vista and Nvidia... And feel free to send a complaint to Nvidia as well.

Re: SE5 - Slow / jaggy mouse cursor
How do you run in 'windowed mode' ???
All that is done before the naked stars is remembered
Re: SE5 - Slow / jaggy mouse cursor
In the game launcher, select Setup, then choose Windowed from the Video Mode box.
Re: SE5 - Slow / jaggy mouse cursor
I also run the game in 1280x1024 , but im using windows XP.
That lag is still there, so it's not only for vista. True, it's not unplayable, but as said before, annoying.
Re: SE5 - Slow / jaggy mouse cursor
I gave the game another chance with 1.58 and the balance mod. I don't know how to put it... it's a PIECE OF CRAP, technically wise! I get incredible 20fps!! in the technology window in 1280x1024 (setting the device to my gfx card, using windowed and changing res to 1280x1024 in the HUDsomething.txt file. I mean, that's a JOKE, right? Its just a screen with a bunch of numbers and graphs! It should reach far more than 100!! frames. And there is this DX10 fix1 in the settings.txt, set to true... dunno what it doesn, didnt change anything fps wise.
And don't tell me its nvidia's fault! If it were so, there had to be countless other games like SEV, but there weren't. Either they run or not, but as slow as this game? Its a miracle!
For the specs, running a 8800gts 640mb with a C2D @ 3ghz and Vista business.

Re: SE5 - Slow / jaggy mouse cursor
I'm also using a 8800 card with Vista and it runs like pants.I can only play on 1024 res to get 30FPS.

Re: SE5 - Slow / jaggy mouse cursor
If you turn off the "smooth edges of fonts setting" for windows, you'll get a decent improvement in your framerate.

Re: SE5 - Slow / jaggy mouse cursor
Kwok is right! I am now getting double the frame rate by turning of the smooth edges of fonts setting in Vista.
Re: SE5 - Slow / jaggy mouse cursor
That's how its supposed to be! But C. Kwok, I hope there will be a fix for resolutions higher than 1024*768!
sysop39 found the problem, the screens where it shows the system display in the background cause the extreme performance loss. It's rather annoying, since it happens in every window that's on top. I don't know why that wasn't already fixed.
Malfador must be running 1024*768 resolution so it doesn't bother him, huh? :/

Re: SE5 - Slow / jaggy mouse cursor
I was having the jaggy laggy mouse problem with the whole game. I lowered all the setup options to the bare minimum and the problem was solved. Thank you all for your input into this forum and this game.
Game on...
Re: SE5 - Slow / jaggy mouse cursor
I'm new to Vista how do you turn off the smooth edges of fonts?
Re: SE5 - Slow / jaggy mouse cursor
A Klingon quote from "The Final Reflection"?

Re: SE5 - Slow / jaggy mouse cursor
I just noticed that this problem does not occur when switching to 1024x768. I guess that is because the windows in 1024x768 aren't windows anymore but full screens. It seems the game is having performance issues when opening a window while the System display beneath that window is still shown.
Fiddling with any of the other graphic options in the setup menu doesn't affect frame rate one bit.
