Finate resourses

Got two questions about finate resourses. First question... is there a way to turn off a collector without having to destroy it and rebuilt it when you want to start it up again? Second question. Is the AI smart enough to build storage facilities and to stop and start collection as needed? Read that last as the AI has full storage for X resource, will the AI stop collecting and thus losing that resource.

There is no mothballing of facilities at this time.

There's nothing in the AI scripts that really deals with finite resources, so there going to behave as normal until they run out of resources.

So, in finite resource games you (player) have to manually manage your resource extraction to match your production+ maintenance + storage? That would be very disappointing.

You should already do that in normal games (unless of course you play against the AI and don't care about efficiency).

The stock AI doesn't do anything differently that I can tell with regard to resources, vs an unlimited resource game. It starves in a heartbeat.

You can't suspend mining/collection, the only way is to destroy the mining/collection facility. Careful building of your empire and a bit of extra storage space are the optimal path to take, and yes it takes a much closer eye. The weak AI will give you plenty of time to concentrate on such domestic affairs though. Oh, and resource converters are your friend. Smiling

Unnamed's AI mod gives the AI a better handle on resources (and growth) but it still tends to overproduce and drain itself dry if it can't grow at a steady rate.

Really, the game's not designed for finite resources...neither was SEIV, though some 3rd party races there did a much better job of managing them. It's virtually guaranteed to cripple the AI by mid-game in a large quadrant, no matter how you try to help them. Versus other human players it would make for a more interesting strategic game, I imagine, but I'm one of those that only plays vs the computer these days.

Unlimited storage should greatly help the AI.
