We need a Babylon 5 Mod

Submitted by Mr Morden on Sat, 2006-10-07 15:03. SE:V MODs

Ok firstly i havent a clue how to mod this game other than changing the data files and adding pictures, so in other words im fine untill it come to the 3d ship models and graphics, then im kinda buggered.

So...Is any one working on a b5 mod at the moment, I realy would like to get the game when it finaly appears in the uk and Build up my forces at Zah'dun then kick the crap out of the damn Isa.

I had the one for Se4 but i wasnt keen on it, it took way to many engines for ships to actualy move and the weapon ranges sucked and most of the default empire ai wouldnt load properly.

In not having a go at the guys that made it, i know a lot of work and time have gone in to it, i just hope they dont limit the weapon range and Engine power as much if they make one for se5.

Thanks
MrM

Oh and.....What do you want?

Played it only once in SE4,

Submitted by Shrike on Sun, 2006-10-08 06:07.

Played it only once in SE4, mostly due to what you described. There were some interesting concepts though and the races were well done. I once discovered a derelict, which could apparently be colonized. Great idea, but flawed in that it didn't allow for people to be dropped onto it. I would welcome this kind of "salvage and benefit" kind of space wrecks as an additional kind of planet ruins.

I agreee a B5 Mod!!!!

Submitted by Turkish on Sun, 2006-10-08 12:39.

I would have to agree, with having a B5 mod.... It would be interesting, lets see if the the maker of a B5 mod can do a better job with it than the person who did the B5 mod for SE:4!!!!

I'm not so sure a b5 mod

Submitted by LordHavoc on Sun, 2006-10-08 13:45.

I'm not so sure a b5 mod would work. In terms of power, the shadows/vorlons could kick mimbari/Ranger ass. Mimbari/Rangers could kick Drazi/Narn/Centari ass, and those last three could kick Terrans ass. Even at the end of the series the power difference between the races was still there.
You couldn't have a B5 mod without including all of the above races.

But all is not lost. The way I would tackle that would be to have all the races starting at even ground. The elements of B5 would in fact be the technologies (not unlike adamant) you could have three traits at the start which lead you to the top technologies. For example the three traits I would go with would be shadow, vorlon and league. The shadows would lead you to advanced cloaking and slicor beam, the vorlon would lead you to shields and lightning ray, and the league I would "make up" some cool 'first one' technology that would be fitting. After all, the very last episode of B5 showed us that humans would eventually reach that level of technology.

For the small details I would grab every little bit of technology from the series and then pad it out to make a decent sized tech tree.
So for example the weapons, you would have laser, antimatter beam (mimbari i believe), graviton beam (those green ships, can't remember the race), slicor beam, lightning ray, pulse cannons, mass drivers (and many many more).

It's do-able, but I would start all the races on even ground and seperate them with trait based tech trees, and give the lesser races like Terrans the same 'potential' as the Vorlons & Shadows. And make the Vorlons and Shadows start at the beginning.

IMO, the real difficulty

Submitted by Sphinx on Sun, 2006-10-08 14:34.

IMO, the real difficulty would be to model the ships... and 3D effects for weapons...

You could make it just like

Submitted by Mr Morden on Sun, 2006-10-08 14:39.

You could make it just like the tv show where the shadows or the vorlons could omgwtfbbqpwn anyone else, but make there ships have much larger maintenance costs,

So in theory one shadow ship could easly kill 2 or 3 earth ships, however there upkeep would be so huge that they wouldnt be able to field a force as large as the younger races hence 4 or 5 earth ship could take one down, so a large fleet of earth ships could take down a small fleet of shadows.

Would make the game more in line with the tv series.

But im not sure if that would be programable,

oh and dose anyone know why I can only take 3 or 4 turns in the demo before it hangs on the processing after players turns screen ? its pissing me off now.

a restrictive treaty perhaps

Submitted by rukoth on Sun, 2006-10-08 15:35.

didn't follow the series entirely, but as i recall the vorlons and shadows refused to engage eachother almost entirely, and infact refused to really engage anyone at all in battle. I can only recall a couple instances, up to the very end of the show, where they fought anyone short of those entering their territory. choosing instead to rally the lesser races together to fight it out, in effort to prove whose philosophy was right.

with that in mind then could you simply start the vorlons and shadows with some kind of highly restrictive treaty, the violation of which takes a serious toll on their populations happiness? or perhaps something else more inline with the spirit of the show?

just a thought.

You've gotta make a trade

Submitted by LordHavoc on Sun, 2006-10-08 16:13.

You've gotta make a trade off on what would a playable mod and the TV show. The TV show has been done, its out there. Trying to emulate that would be doomed to failure due to the high expectations of the B5 fans (myself proudly included). If you need your B5 fix, watch season 5 again.

To address another post here, keeping the technology gap and introducing maintainance costs isn't going to be a good solution. You would still have to dumb down the Shadows and the Vorlons a considerable amount. Since they both have the ability to destroy most lower race ships in a single hit, with possible exception being the Mimbari.

Quote:
shadow ship could easly kill 2 or 3 earth ships

The Shadows are masters of hyperspace (being able to move in and out without needing to open a gate). They could kill entire fleets of earth vessels without ever needing to exit hyperspace. They would simply open a series of jump points on top of the ships.

The Mimbari did a similar trick in the war against the Terrans, and in that war the Terrans only ever managed to destroy one Mimbari ship...The black star. So if the Mimbari can do that, think what a race that's 100's thousands of years older can do.

That would work very well if

Submitted by LordHavoc on Sun, 2006-10-08 16:20.

That would work very well if you were to make a scenario based mod. You would have to restrict what races were playable. I would say Human, Drazi, Narn, Centari, Ranger, Pak'ma'ra and possibly the Vree.

Weapon effects aren't 3D.

Submitted by LordHavoc on Sun, 2006-10-08 16:24.

Weapon effects aren't 3D. And modelling the ships isn't that hard once you've gotten a bit of practice in.

well yeah, i thnik you're right

Submitted by rukoth on Sun, 2006-10-08 16:52.

it would be pretty boring to play the vorlans or shadows under those rules, you'd be too restricted.

but if someone could work it out, another possible consequence of engaging in hostilities/ violating treaties, when you are the vorlons or shadows is the emergence of the other ancient ones, first ones(whatever they were called) just as happened at the end of the show. so you only risk it if you think you can take them all on.

i would atleast like to see the ability to ally yourselves with these super powers. i think a mod should capture the essence of the show its derived from, not just techs, images. but i have no idea how to accomplish that.

B5 Mod all the way

Submitted by The_Great_One on Sun, 2006-10-08 17:05.

I am watching the series now from netflix. Im on seson two, disc 5, but I haven't seen any of the shows on that disc. I think that Narn, Terrans, League on non aligned are quiet similar. The Minbari, Centauri, ISA would be similar. The finally the Vorlons, Shadows, First ones would be on an acient level.

As tecnology wise goes you can go to http://www.b5tech.com

Also we need jump gates so you can get to the galaxy in the far right to the galaxy in the far left without having to go through a hundred warps.

Better Space stations which can be built any were (i dont know if thats alredy possioble with construction yard ship).

Also to fix the zoom, paning and selection in the 3d map because it's impossiable to drag a box aroud a few units then have to indivudialy select units (because you can't hold the shift and drag a box aroud other units.

Well that's all

O I love the game since I saw it ( didn't like GC2 as much because it had a borring tech tree; the same thing happened in Sword of the stars; but theuniverse's were quiet large even though the demo had the galaxy on small. I am reasured that SEV is better because the online(even though it can be slow) and the custimizationablity(i know that word looks weird) which is cool because i can have fun with star wars and B5, even Star Trek with out having to buy three different space games.

That's deffently it.

OO one last thing(realy this time it will be the last time) the b5tech manual has a million links to billion other web sites with trillons of info on the wepon systems and everything.

That sounds a little outside of the scope of a mod... and not really a useful function considering the way the game works (or at least the way my strategy works).

There are 10 types of people in the world:

Those that understand binary, and those that don't.
