HELP! Long to Real?

Ok...this is driving me crazy. Is there ANY way to change a "long" value into a "real" value in the SE5 scripting language?

I need to add a "long" value to a "real" value, which doesn't sound like it should be so hard - an integer plus a real will just give you another real afterall - but I can't find a way to make it happen!

Or...as an alternative...is there a way to generate a random "real" value?

A workaround?
set real_variable := long_variable * 1.0
