Ship/Unit Move Bug -- Crashing game. V1.44

Submitted by tmcqui01 on Sat, 2007-08-18 11:38. Bug Reports

Hello --

I'm running my very first SE5 game and I've run into a bug that's dead-ending my save game. Previous save games eventually begin having the same crashing problems. Whenever I attempt to move a ship or unit the game crashes. If I attempt to skip the turn, the game appears to go into a loop and hang during the computer players turn.

Here's the error message I receive EVERY time a crash occurs:

"Access violation at address 00507010 in module 'SE5.exe'. Write of address 00000054"

Here's my game info:

Game Type: Standard SE5
Game Date: 2407.0
Number of Players: 10 (hotseat -- single player)
Game Version: 1.44
Turn Method: Turn Based
Machine Usage: Same Machine

The game is setup as a the largest possible universe -- default type. The game is setup to allow 20K units and 20K ships but I've only 70 ships and 800 or so units in 20 fleets. I have a custom box running a 3GHZ Intel Processor (old socket 478), 1GB of ram (over 500 MB avail), XP SP2 with oodles of HD space (over 100GB).

I don't have a problem starting another game but don't want to invest the time until I'm confident that it won't go to waste. Am I the only one seeing this problem? Would someone like to see the save files?

Thanks!

I have had this problem, too. I noticed in the forums that others have had similar crashes. Its been called the "saved game" bug amongst others. I have not seen a straight answer or workable solution from anyone. But, I thought I saw in the forums a fix is due out in the next patch. We'll see.

Strategy First is reccommending only starting small or medium sized maps.

I am noticing a similar bug related to moving ships.

First of all, you apparently can no longer tell a ship to move to some distant spot several systems away (like telling a colony ship to colonize a planet 3 systems away).

You have to manually 'drive' the ship there now by making it warp the various transit points through each system. I thought this was related to there being enemy ships present in the in between systems, but this was never a problem before.

The other thing that is happening, is that when moving a ship around a system manually (like exploring with a scout) 1 hex at a time (to avoid asteroids and nebulae), at some point the game just loses it's mind and no longer displays the current hex down below in the details mini screen, and also refuses to process the turn. I am forced to exit and re-load the game to continue at this point.

Is it just me, or is 1.44 a huge step backwards and FULL of new bugs???
