Your Thoughts on Variable Turn Lenght in a 4x Game. . .

Submitted by Kilson on Wed, 2007-08-15 12:09. Off-topic & Casual Conversations

Here is the question..

If you could set the turn length in a game would you use this feature?
if then Event handling for re( Research/ build )
What would you pick to be a turn Break Event, that would end turn .
would you want this to be set or changeable?

Say you wanted the turn to last 1 year
4 months in a enemy ship enters your system --
Player Turn Ends At 4 months - Giving control back to player

Would a waring if the turn was longer than a 1 month be helpful, or a waring after a player defined Set # of turns went by?

Game is done in Standard 12 month = 1 year

If you could pick from
1 month
2 month
3 month
4 month
5 month
6 month
7 month
8 month
9 month
10 month
11 month
1 year
1.5 years
2 years
5 years
10 years

What 6 would you use?

Thanks Kilson

I can't think of any reason why I'd want to change the turn length to anything other than the 1 month minimum, so no, I wouldn't use suah a feature.

"Good morning, Pooh Bear," said Eeyore gloomily. "If it /is/ a good morning," he said. "Which I doubt," said he.

In our 4p game far too much happens in just 1 month.
I really couldn't afford to miss one Sticking out tongue

Hmm I should have said for single player only. . .

At the start ships can only travel at 10%c max during interstellar travel. So at the start of the game the nearest planet to the players home world is around is around 3 months travel time(in same system) Research can take years for an major advancement, such as the first Flt mode of transportation. Until Ftl modes of transportation are discovered it can take years or centuries to reach new stars.

But later on the speed will increases drastically in both ship speeds and research speeds.

Here is list of interstellar drive tech trees

Fusion -- STL -- Orion style drive -- Max speed is 40%c at max shielding tech (First Drive)
Nexus Drive -- Uses pulse of negative energy to trigger the natural phenomenon of linked gravity matrix points.
Hyper Drive -- Translates Ship in to nearby Compressed dimensional space. Shorting Distance between to points in Regular space
Warp Drive -- Think Star trek
Gravity Drive -- Links two near points and forms a tunnel between them that the ship travels through, in a continues series of tunnels to reach its destination.
Jump Drive -- Short range 30 Light years max, Requires a Star or strong gravity source to anchor the arrival point-- Can not jump to empty space
Probability Drive -- uses Strange space harmonics to trick the universe that the ship is really there. -- Broadcast Destination of ship

There are a few more drive Ideas Im playing with ...
Each line except the Fusion drive have both advantages and disadvantages no drive is really any better than any other.. Ships may have more than one FTL Drive Type.

Thanks For your replies
