Space Empires VI(or at least V 1/2)

Submitted by majorhavoc on Tue, 2007-08-14 00:31. Space Empires V General

I propose that starting with say patch 2.0(we will get there)Space Empires 5 should be scrapped and all subsequent releases should have the title of Space Empires 6 stamped on them. That way we can start all over again with patch 1.01 and people will be fooled into thinking they are getting a new game release.

And what is it good for? People like to see a game is maintained. Malfador takes care of it products and delivers patches to the community.

If Malfador needs money they could also release an extension pack.

Why don't you let Malfador make the call on that one. Its their game.

I think, peprsonally, they should recall the game completely untill it's all work out. Because, right now, i'm having more fun with space empires IV, and if space empires V gets recalled untill most of the bugs are cleaned, it will be way better, because we wont be all "MAN, THIS GAME SUCKS, IT HAS SO MANY BUGS!" or "Dude i'm tired of the enemy only using only one ship design, it's driving me crazy!" Instead, we will be, "Oh, man, space empires IV is cool, i cant wait until they rerelease space empires V, it will be so much better."

we all know this game should have been realeased about today at 1.44, but i don´t think a recall or rename will do any good.

Dont get me wrong, i love the game, i just think that if so many people are complaining about it, then they should stop playing it untill it's completely fixed. I mean, first they rush him to finish it, and when he does what they want (finish it befor it's done) they complain that he went to fast and had too many bugs. I mean DO YOU WANT HIM TO FINISH IT OR NOT?! Everyone should just sit back and be patient. Like drink some tea or something, it helps you relax and cool down (History channel said that).

SEVI? Oh no! It took about 200 patches to get SEIV to the point where it was quite playable. Then we went to SEV and seemed to throw out everything that was learned in refining SEIV. It seems to me we have at least 150 or so patches to go before we throw out everything and start all over again.

Only another 150 more patches to go. And to think I was getting worried about the future of this game...... Now the next challenge will be living long enough for me to see the final patch.

And as for the solution of "if you don't like don't play it", I think that alot of people are already doing just that or are about to.

He's exaggerating. SEIV "only" had 95 patches, and was playable long before that.

"Good morning, Pooh Bear," said Eeyore gloomily. "If it /is/ a good morning," he said. "Which I doubt," said he.

You guys who are complaining about the patches are ungreatful. You must not know what its like to recieve no support at all on a game you absloutley love.

Releasing 95 patches for a game goes to show that malfador actually cares about its products. As most bigger games nowdays published by greedy companies could care less about a game once its out. If you love one of their games don't expect to see much support on it. I could go off listing compaies terrible for support but i think you already know who they are.

I dont see why anyone has to complain. There can never be too many patches for a game. This game has had a ton of patches already and probably will be alot more in the furture. Mabye you should take this as an oppourtunity to suggest something you might like to see in the furture of this evolving project rather than complain about dumb, small things like this. Sticking out tongue

But those other game mostly work! OK, aside from technical problems maybe, but the gameplay works! But in this game, !!nothing!! is completely working or balanced. The AI is bull****, the performance can be described: Vista installed on a 386.
I heard there is only one guy, Malfador, working on this game, right? Someone said that once when I asked about that. There we have the problem. A one man company for such a complex game is a joke.

Actually, I am enjoying playing the game too, and I look forward to it getting better. I just don't understand why we seem to have lost all the accumulated knowledge/experience from SEIV when SEV came out. Surely all the logic that went into those improvements would apply to the new game, but it seems like we started all over from scratch.

There's a lot of difference mechanically between the two games, so a lot of items were not directly applicable to SE:V as they were in SE:IV.

Sometimes programmers enjoy the chance to start over [nearly] from scratch. Hindsight always reveals better ways of doing things, so it can be entertaining to redo various aspects of a game. I didn't ever play SEIV, but I think many of the game mechanics were changed to provide greater modding flexibility.

Marketing personnel are not the only reason we see lots of game sequels Smiling Sometimes it might be that inefficient line-of-sight algorithm, or that kludgey combat engine... lodged like a splinter in the back of the programmer's mind, driving him mad.

A lot of items that /are/ directly applicable were dropped in SEV, though. The first one that comes to mind is allowing game hosts to change passwords for abandoned empires, because we regularly run into that problem on PBW.

"Good morning, Pooh Bear," said Eeyore gloomily. "If it /is/ a good morning," he said. "Which I doubt," said he.

I've had a lot of fun with SEV, and applaud the ongoing support that is lavished upon the game. However, when issues such as "Display sensor history of colonies previously detected" were approached and dropped again due to being too complex a change to implement, I fear for the long term future of the game...

That is not quite correct. What was deemed not feasible for SE:V was implementing a full-scale memory sight feature that would track all objects. It required too many fundamental changes to the underlying code and interface. That is not quite the same as displaying the ownership of a planet.

Well the thread was a while ago - when I read it I understood it as not being able to provide a "shaded out" version of the enemy colony details in the main sector view once you were back out of sensor range, with the last details (i.e. number of ships / units) that you detected by radar.

I definitely agree that tracking all ships would be a massive undertaking and would doubtful be worth it in terms of the AI's ability to make use in any reliable way. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that the sector view colony icons can in future remain "lit" in some capacity after sensor coverage stops, helping human and AI players' alike to remember to consider targeting them, and also making the colour minimap reach its full potential by not reverting colour once colonies are unseen again. And losing colonies off the "Colonisable and empty" planets list so you don't make needless colony ship trips when they are occupied!

And needless to say Kwok, I respect the fact that you have the inside track on this kind of information. So here's hoping that those things are achievable and will bless us in the months to come...
