Slipping Through Warp Points

Submitted by Harmonious Hegemony on Wed, 2007-08-01 13:45. Space Empires V General

Ever since the 1.44 patch came out I have noticed that from time to time enemy ships seem to pass through warp points that I have blockaded with my own fleets. This happens regardless of which side of the warp point I have my ships posted on. After the AI's take their turns, there they are, seemingly by magic, in the middle of my system. I can't figure out how they get through without engaging my ships. I don't think it's cloaking because I'm maxed out on sensors and when in Tactical Combat mode I can't see that component installed on the enemy's designs. What am I missing?

This happens to me too, I thought I was doing it wrong somehow. When I looked in the sector view i could see enemy ships near the mouth of the hole, but no combat was triggered. I did notice that the place this happened was a yellow warp point, described as "unstable" if I rememeber, and not a blue "large stable" warp. Interested to see other thoughts here.

Odd... I'd thought at first the warp point was cloaking the ships, but you tell you are maxed out in sensors, and the best warp point cloak is 16 IIRC...

HH may be maxed in sensors, but I am not. So, for my issue, the yellow warp could be cloaking the ships?

Depends on your mod... in BM IIRC only some of the green ones do that. Check their descriptions!

I've seen this in both stock and balance mod games, but only since the 1.44 patch.

This is starting to sound like a new bug.

Ok, checked my funny yellow warp point in more detail last eve. I didn't know you could get a more detailed report on a warp point and it did indeed list an ability as confounding basic sensors. So it looks as though there's nothing wrong with that, it was just an effect i did not know could occur.

Uhh, how does one go about getting a detailed report on warp points?

You select the warp point and it will give basic info, "large, stable" or something else. Then hit the little note paper button that you use to get a report on anything, a ship a planet whatever, and a much more detailed report comes up that will list the warp points max ship size and other attributes, if the warp is messing with sensors, that will be listed as an atribute.

Right - Got it. So I did this for the warp point where I was having this issue (a green one) and it said "Unusual gravitic fields . . . mask ships from basic scanners". Now scanners are different from sensors, so you can't scan ships in that sector but you should be able to tell they are there with your sensors, right? As far as I can recall, I don't think I have ever been able to move through any kind of warp point that was being blockaded by an AI without fighting my way through.

I'm too new to the game to know much more than what's already in this thread, but it seems to me that the effect of this warp point attribute is that blockade ships will not spot enemy vessals and will not intiate combat. In my game (my first) there is only this one warp point that is a combat zone, so i dont actually know how its supposed to work normally. I put a single fighter in each of the 6 sectors around the warp point and as a result, I get warning of incursions when these fighters are crossed.

It should read sensors, not scanners.

V 1.44 Balance Mod 1.09 , just happened to me. 30+ enemy ships on 3 different turns appeared in my sector and destroyed one of my planets each time over about 15 turn time period. 3 warp points totally blockaded by my 15+ ships at each point. As if my ships didn't exist. Wasted my game. Hadn't happened to me before installing BM and I had played numerous games in stock.

edit - Yellow warp point the only one within their ships travel range.

BM includes a version of FQM, that modifies some aspect of the galaxy, not only the skin. I think that some Warp Point in FQM could mask ship.

I have Large green WP. This wp has some unusual graviton emissions... gravitic fields in sector -5-9 cause combat sensor interference of -30%.

Anyway, I couln't seem to stop any ships at this WP, they just went right on through. I thought it was my sensors, but now (after reading your info) I'm not sure. Maybe FQM is messed up and if there is any "sensor" interference of any type it acts like a perfect cloak.

actually, I just realised that I broke through the next systems WP 20 turns ago, so that I could get to a more defensable WP. The other side of this green WP behaved wierdly. I think I sweept it with cloaked mine sweepers, which went through the WP sector first (didn't sweep), then I unfleeted them and sent them back through, and then the swept the mine fields (and the got attacked and died)...

SEV, more than a feeling.

Since making this post I have found that enemy ships can slip though any type of warp point, not just the green ones or ones that have system notes about them. This doesn't happen at all warp points, just some of them and there is no way to tell in advance where it will happen. You can always catch them if you post a picket posted at the warp point with Tachyon sensors, however. I don't have enough motivation to go back and suffer through a stock game again to see if this only happens in the Balance Mod or not. I do think it is a bug though, that should be fixed.

Look at the sector's abilities - there is probably an obscuration ability present.

Aha, I see. So it's intentional. Well thats ok. I trumped their cheat by taking the whole universe back in time. I met them on their side of the portal with a fleet of my own, knowing the route they took. The battle was glorious Ha Ha Ha Smiling . Lol.
Anyway, I guess I need to look closer at the descriptions from now on.
