BM1.08+SEV1.44 and wth happened to turn processing?

Submitted by Frohike on Tue, 2007-07-24 17:36. SE:V MODs

Hello everybody,
I just have a small problem with the BM1.08 i recently installed.
After I played 2Games with v.1.44 w/o mods until turn +250 I installed the BM1.08. I started a new game in a small Paradise (FQM is also a nice mod) galaxy i noticed that the time it takes to process every AI is really high.
Although i am just at turn 91 it takes twice as long for every turn to process as in my other game with 260turns, bigger galaxy and 7 or so major AI´s!
Is it because I used BM v1.08 which isnt up to the v1.44 or is that a general "problem" of BM?
It´s a nice mod, but if i have to wait twice or 3times as long for a new turn...

‹ BM 1.10 where can i download ergie272's MapCompiler? ›

The actual time spent on AI processing is usually pretty small; combat resolution takes up a vast majority of the turn processing times (stock and mods). I forget the specifics, but there are different colored progress bars that measure AI thinking versus combat resolution (green and red, IIRC).

I played 1.8BM straight after the patch was released after reading turn proccesing had been improved and thought it was just slow as before.Looks like it might be BM that is the reaason.

It's mostly due to the larger number of elements in play due to lower maintenance costs etc. This means more things to move and order - which is the main delay you are experiencing.

The actual AI thinking is the pause before the green progress bar is drawn and is very small.

In v1.10 I will return the costs back to stock levels to improve turn times.

I've never played stock -- I hope I can adapt to this. I hope you can remember all the ways you changed the AI that depend on low maintenance costs and revert them.

I kind of like the way that having many disposable units made the game play differently from Civ or GalCiv. You can just throw them into combat and watch the carnage, you don't have to conserve them. Also, those AI fleets of 18 frigates are cool.

v1.10 will not be released until September. However, you can always change the maintenance starting costs in settings.txt for your version to boost performance now. It'll slow down the pace a bit and reduce the overall number of ships/units you'll have - but otherwise it'll be the same experience. If you change it for a current savegame, expect your maintenance costs to increase by about 60%.

So what your saying is that in effect (simplification), we can improve our turn processing performance by increasing maintenance costs by 60%?

Would changing this (back) damage the AI play?

How exactly would this be done, where?

Any chance of a 1.9 heavy maint version Eye-wink

Thanks,
Chad

In the data folder, setttings.txt has 3 lines that set the starting maintenance rates for ships, units, and facilities.

Currently it's 20% for ships, 5% for units and 5% for facilities. If you increase it to 25%, 10%, 10% respectively, you'll get about 50% fewer objects in play and consequently reduce turn times. The AI doesn't need any changes to cope.

So in effect wouldn't I end up with the same result if I just halved the number of allowed units/ships?

Or is this something that actually has another effect?

Thanks,
Chad

Not quite. The maintenance reduction will still allow empires to grow in proportion with the number of colonies as well as speed up all turns, rather than just players that reached the max limit.
