Major music improvement!

Submitted by Celegans on Mon, 2007-07-23 22:01. Space Empires V General

Hi all, just a recommendation of something that has worked really well for me: I replaced SE-V's stock music files with the music files from "X3 - Reunion". What a difference! I picked up X3 from a software bargin bin for $15 and loved it, but the soundtrack from that game is one of the best I've ever come across, and it matches the "epic space saga" genre perfectly. I highly recommend making this easy update!

PS - In case MM is reading, I suggest looking to engage the music artist that did the X3 soundtrack for any future SE release...!

Cheers!

Agree about X3 but not a fan of the music. It is however nice and easy to mod the music on SEV like most thisngs exept the AI.

Am I the only one who really liked the default SE5 music? Admittedly, I wish there was more of it - I tend to turn off the music simply because there are so few tracks that the songs quickly repeat themselves. The mood, however, fits perfectly and I thought the quality was good.

Nah, both X3's and SEV's music is rather poor I think. SEIV was a little better from what I remember, although I soon turned that off too. Master of Orion 2's music is a perfect example of how it should be done. MoO3 had an alright atmospheric soundtrack, too.

Actually, I think the old game "Ascendancy" had the best ever music for a space genre game. The game in general was mostly broken so I didn't keep it around. Pity, because if I had it I would load the music from it for SEV.

The music files are *.mp3s that are in the plain on the disk after X3 is installed. Its a snap to copy them over, or you can just update your Settings.txt to point to the alternate location/set of files. Be mindful of the Settings.txt line about the number of music tracks - it needs to match the actual number of music files you're bringing in.

Well, upload it as the X3 music mod so the rest of us can enjoy. I bought X3 a while ago, but got gypped because someone had already used the key, so I could never patch. They said it was just too bad, so I threw it out.

No new news on Longship mod. Unnamed is still working on the AI. It'll be out soon though

The Ascendency music was indeed brilliant, if a little short by today's standards. It's probably my favourite of all time along with the music to Total Annihilation. Both of those games had epic music WAY ahead of when such things were common.

Ascendency is available on various abandonware sites (e.g. http://www.abandonia.com/games/221/Ascendancy.htm) and playable via the DOSBox emulator - but the music is not available as easily copied files as far as I can see. Ascendency is about as old as the mp3 file format itself so I think that can be forgiven!!!

If anyone were able to somehow extract the music from Ascendency and provide it for use with SEV I suspect they'd make a lot of people happy (including me!). It fits perfectly.

Needless to say - go easy on uploading X3 music since that game is certainly not abandonware and would be deleted in a flash.

Logic Factory (the Creaters of Ascendancy) makes another game with brilliant music. Its called "Leviathan - The Tone Rebellion" (released 1997). The Music form Tone Rebellion is on CD in wav Format, just ready for listening! Eye-wink

The Ascendancy music is available on the web as mp3 files, just look around. I have them here, so I know it. Eye-wink
(I don't think it is illegal to have the music as mp3 for a game you own Laughing out loud)

Initially, I put in the new BattleStar Galactica (Season 1) music for SE V, which works quite well, too.

Hey - If you could rip the music from Ascendancy that would be great. I really liked that music for a space genre game.

So it must just be me, anyone else have a problem with the music repeating when you replace the 'stock' .mp3's with your own?

I use a fair amount of music by Jon Hailleur, this icelandic synth artist. You can get a lot of it off of the Eve Online web site, actually. They offer it for free here: http://www.eve-online.com/download/music/

I like the epic scope, and he's one of those few electronica artists who doesn't just lay down a couple base lines and call it a day.

Speaking of, they've put more stuff up on there...heeey...

as a long time X3 player I really liked the music, in fact it's awesome IMO e.g. the theme for Kingdoms End sector was one of those gaming moments when I'd just chased down a Kha'ak cluster and was just sitting in an asteroid field plotting my next move and the music hit me - but I wouldn't put the combat music in to SEV - too much adrenalin for the style of play. But yeah I agree that getting Alexei Zakharov to do some music for SEV would be a real coup for MM

http://gh.ffshrine.org has music from most games, including X3. I like to listen to the music from Massive Assault Network while playing SE5, though that game is much more fast-paced and that's apparent in its music.

I prefer Klingon Opera, myself (the soundtrack to Conan the Barbarian, for example).

I also used some of the work done by the guys who did the Star Control 2 soundtrack (greatest space game ever made, greatest soundtrack ever made)

And for fun I throw in some AC/DC, Metallica, ect...

All that is done before the naked stars is remembered

Does anyone know if the playlist settings could be put in a separate and easy to edit file? I guess that's up to Aaron, but I figure it would be easier to add tracks than having to add numbered lines and making sure the numbers are just right...

I found out a detail that might be of interest for those reading this thread:

You have to use relative paths if you want to load music from another directory. Absolute paths will not work.

So you'll have to use backslashes and dots to "climb" out of the SE5 Music directory. I am unsure if anything can be done to access files on another drive though.

Laughing out loud Of all the things needing improvement I'd place music near the bottom. I don't even play the music (which should improve game speed I hope). If I wanted music I'd turn on the stereo. I usually don't use any sound at all (got to keep an eye and ear on the kids Laughing out loud ).
