Mouse freezes every 3 seconds - help please!

Submitted by Taipan on Sat, 2007-07-21 13:13. Space Empires V General

I was a big fan of SE-IV so yesterday I bought SE-V. Both in the demo version as in the patched full version I get the same problem: every 2-3 seconds my mouse will freeze for 1 second and then continue moving normally. It is very regular, as if the software is polling something or such. It is so annoying that it makes the game unplayable Sad

My system is a clean Win XP SP 2. The problem *only* occurs with SE-V, not with any other game, application, or on the general desktop (I can circle my mouse around forever and it goes smoothly). Th prblem doesnt occur on the Se-V launch screen, only after hitting the "Play" button when the game goes full-screen.

Since I came across this problem yesterday I went into a PC-maintenance frenzy and have already done the following:

- updated mouse drivers
- updated video card drivers
- tried running the game with lowest quality graphics settings
- defragged both harddisks
- run antivirus and spyware checks
- ran a registry cleaning tool.

None of that helped. My system is sufficiently above minimum specs: 2.4 Ghz Pentium, 1Gb RAM, Nvidia Geforce 6600 graphics card.

Another confirmation came from this: with the game active, I hit alt-tab, go to desktop, launch task manager, and view processes. SE-V takes up between 5 and 15% of CPU capacity, then spikes to 65% every 2-3 seconds.

Can anyone help? Make any suggestions, or let me know if you too have experienced something like this?

Thanks in advance,
Taipan

Have you tried switching around the 'Display Driver', '3D Device' and 'Video Memory Usage' settings in the SEV launchmenu setup? Might make a difference.

Yes I have (now), thanks for the suggestion, but that didn't seem to change anything. (certainly still have the mouse problem). For display driver it only gives me one option (primary display driver). Resolution I left at the default 1024x768 which was also the lowest one I saw. I tried video mem usage on both auto and safe. For " 3d device" I got 3 options which I all tried...(Direct3D T&L HAL was my default).

Does anyone know if this forum is the best place for tech support for SE-V? Do the developers from Malfador come here too ?

Thanks in advance for any other suggestions.

Is the problem there when running the game in Windowed Mode too?

Perhaps you could try turning up the priority for the se5.exe application to High.

At any rate, I think your best option might be to just send an email to . Just describe the problem and list your system specs, then Aaron( the developer ) will probably look into it.

Is your pentium a dual core?

If so, after se5 startup but before pressing play try going to desktop, bring up task manager and right click the se5.exe process, set the CPU affinity to a single CPU.

Alternatively you could try setting the multi-threading option near the top of data/settings.txt to TRUE.

Thanks Raapys. I would love to try it in windowed mode, I think there would be a good chance that that would solve it. But how do I get it into windowed mode? I tried Alt-Enter when the game was running but that didn't work, nor did I find something under "options" for it.

If I email malfador, I think I'll just link to this thread in it... unless you think I didn't provide enough details in my original post?

Windowed mode is under "Video Mode".

Windowed mode is the highest option on the resolution drop-down.

I don't think that setting actually does anything.

I have seen this same problem on my laptop. However, I've seen it mainly in windowed mode. Try changing your graphics size. For example, I may see it in 1024x768, but is fine in 1400x1024 for whatever reason.

Thank you all for trying to help. Unfortunately the problem persists Sad
I have tried the following:

- Run game in windowed mode -> gave the interesting phenomena of the stuttery mouse when moving over the game window, and smooth mouse when moving over the parts of the desktop that are visible around the game window.

- Tried different resolutions (which all seem to force full screen) and all gave the same problem, e.g. 1024x768x32, 1024x768x16 , 1280x960x32, 1600x1024x32. All these were with video mem usage on "safe" and details on "medium".

- set the se5.exe process to "high priority". Didnt seem to do anything.
- changed data/settings.txt Multithreading to True, no effect, set it back to False.

To answer an earlier question, no my Pentium is not a dual core. The machine is about 3 years old.

What I'd still like to do is change around the screen resolutions WHILE in windowed mode, to for example make the game's resolution match that of my desktop (1152x864). But I don't know if that is possible and if it is, how to do it...
