Why can't fighters capture a planet by themselves???

Submitted by glockgemini on Fri, 2007-07-20 13:01. Space Empires V General

I have one model of fighter. If I load them on a transport and tell the transport to capture a planet, the fighters are sent to do so.

I can take the same set of fighter and attack a planet with the capture planet strategy and all they can do is attack the planet from orbit.

Its not like the transport actually lands on the planet to get the fighters down to the surface. I'm pretty sure they can land by themselves.

My problem was that one of my colonies had gone rogue and I thought about sending some fighters over to recapture it since my troop transports were several systems away. I think it should be an option for fighters to actually capture a planet by themselves.

That's a nice idea, even if it would make the fighters even more overpowered in stock than they are actually. (In BM you would simply make a little bit more point defense weapon platforms...)

Ick. I wish Fighters wouldn't even be able to attack planets in the first place... those stupid rocket pods are ridiculously overpowered in stock.

I haven't played any of the mods, please tell me they are drastically reduced in damage or something...?

I didn't play stock for a long time, but I think fighters are as not as powerful there, probably due to better point defense.

A fighter should NOT be able to capture a planet; It makes no sense. You need ground troops to surpress a populace. It would remove a strategic component of the game.

The fighters are not equipped for re-entry so they cannot capture a planet alone as they need the shielding provided by the landing pod things that the transport ship fires. This is how I see it, you can't put fighters back on one of your own planets without a transport can you?

Myrath:
Yes, that probably would be the solution the most realistic and the best for game play.
They could still offer fire support for the troops, but if every troop dies, the combat is lost. The problem is that you should be able to launch fighters from an enemy planet if the combat is lost.

rahlubenru:
Yes, you can launch/recover fighters without a transport.

Ah I knew you could launch without, didn't think a planet could recover without
