Space Empires V working under linux yet?

Submitted by noxxle on Sat, 2007-07-14 09:53. Space Empires V General

Anybody figured out how to get this to run under Wine or Cedega yet?

As far as I know not the game is built round DirectX which seems to be the limiting step. I dont think a Linux version is in the works either but it would be worth having a look on the Scrapnel games forums as well and asking the same question.

Many games built around directX work under cedega or wine. I wasnt asking for a linux version. I just wanted to know if anybody figured out how to get this to work under Wine or Cedega.

Im going to bump this once a week for all eternity or until someone figures out how to run this game under linux. This game is the ONLY thing keeping windows on my hard drive.

You'd probably get faster results asking on a Wine or Cedega forum. Linux users are going to be in the minority on most gaming sites.

Another thing that can be done to help get wine support for this game is to get it more Votes at the WineHQ app database. To do this, just create an account at WineHQ and then you can register up to three votes for a game you would like to see wine support for.

Good luck in your campaign, noxxle, for a way to get it to run under Wine. I was just pondering the same thing myself. As of the latest nvidia beta drivers and latest patch, Vista x64 still has dismal framerates (as in 15fps with an 8800GTS), and Aaron doesn't know what the problem is and I've spammed Nvidia as much as is reasonable, so hoping someone gets it going under Wine/Cedega eventually. (A mountain of stubborness and pride allows me to dual-boot with *nix, but not XP after having upgraded -- not to mention every modern Linux distro easily sets it up for you while XP will just try to kill the MBR and ignore Vista's existance in all likelihood)

Be a good fellow SE fan and post here if you find a solution elsewhere? Smiling

XP should notice a Vista installation and set up its boot loader with dual-booting goodness. MS's NT OSes recognize other MS OSes and support dual booting them without much hassle. They just tend to not like Linux. Wonder if Vista's boot loader will look for Linux installations, as part of their recent interoperability trends...

Let me make this as easy as possible for those who want to help get this game working under Wine.

Register here:

http://appdb.winehq.org/account.php?sCmd=new

After logging in, go here:

http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iVersionId=7065

If you are logged in, you will notice a voting bar on the left hand side of the screen. REGISTER ALL THREE VOTES FOR SPACE EMPIRES V! You can change these three votes at a later time of course.

Check out the voting stats:

http://appdb.winehq.org/votestats.php

Notice that there is a game in the Top 25 with a mere 25 votes! It would not take many of us registering all three votes to get the attention of Wine developers!

Just voted, not running linux at the moment, but when I do it would be good to know I can bring all my windows stuff with me.

After my 3 votes the total was up to 7, it only needs 12 to be in the top 25, 25 to be in the top 10.

Command & Conquer is at the top with only 50 votes, like noxxle said it wouldn't take many of us to put it at the top of the list, even if you don't run linux, do it for Noxxle, please...

Wow, after seeing the groundswell of support (from 4 votes up to 13) I decided to put in 2 of my votes for SE5 (I saved one for Civ4, sorry Sticking out tongue) - maybe we can make a difference! Laughing out loud

edit: we're at #22 already! YEEHA! Laughing out loud

I'd assumed XP's past disrespect for Linux partitions meant MS OS's simply didn't bother checking for other OS's. Thanks for that heads up; I might give it a try, purely for SE:V's sake. Time to whip out nLite and slipstream in a billion years worth of patches.

I'll sign up and add my votes for SE:V Wine support as well, though. The more OS's to choose from the better.

Edit: 18 votes now, a few more and someone will wake up Monday and notice an obscure niche strategy game has burst on to the top 10 list!

HOLY CRAP! I did not expect to get this many votes so fast! Some people at winehq.org are going to be scratching their heads wondering how this game got so many votes so fast. Hell, the top game (command and conquer 3) only has 51 votes. I bet we can get space empires V to number one within a week.

It's pretty impressive that I could make such a difference. I can see them scratching their heads wondering where the stuff SEV came from. Hope it happens soon.

I'm not sure they'd be entirely surprised, I mean it is Linux, so I'd guess the user base is more likely to want to play a game that requires more thought than most users would.

And it'd be great to be able to drop windows for games, but I can't get decent ATI drivers. I know it was a bad plan, but I wasn't thinking of Linux when I built my PC

Gave three votes to SE:V, and it now has a total of 28 votes. It's now sharing the fifth place with one other game. w00t! Smiling

EDIT: Convinced my sister to make a user and give her three votes too. 31 votes now, only 21 more votes needed (that means 7 more users to give all votes). Sharing 3rd place with Supreme Commander.

It would help if someone could go to this page http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iVersionId=7065 and post the debug/err msgs that Wine spits out when it tries to run Space Empires V. I am not sure how to do this, otherwise I would.

You shouldn't have to have Linux in mind when you buy your hardware; doing that just lets *nix off the hook rather than pushing them to keep up with the bleeding edge of technology. But at any rate, the latest couple ATi/AMD drivers have apparently been a huge improvement, or so I've been told by users.. give 'em a whirl. They work okay with my laptop with its Xpress200M chipset, but that's not exactly a graphics powerhouse. I haven't had a hard time with my 8800GTS either. It's got a long way to go nix does but man is it worlds better than 2004 and earlier!

I would post the error messages but haven't actually tried it yet. Smiling

Edit: I noticed a couple days ago Ubuntu, PCLOS and SUSE repositories haven't kept up with ATi driver releases. You *may* have to download them direct from AMD if they haven't updated.

I added my votes on Wine to make it 52. It's now the number 1 requested Wine application development request. Smiling SEV is the only reason why I'm still dual booting Linux and XP. The game monitor should reference it 1.x not 1.08.

I thought that too Inigma, I was going to email the maintainer later on about what we can do to help. Or if someone already has some info here I'll take that.

Thanks guys, this is amazing. Only took us a couple days! Now we should try to get some Wine debug/err messages posted for the latest version.

Looks like SEV is up to #1 again. It would be nice to get it working. Cedega has trouble installing it but installing via wine and trying to play via cedega gets me into the game but still can't actually play it

For some reason the votes for seV were reset at winehq when v1.08 was removed to focus on 1.44. Please re-register your votes.

Yeah, I waxed it when I removed 1.08. Apparently the votes were tallying for that version only, and not movable to 1.44. Next time I do a version update, instead of deleting the app version and creating a new version, I'll just edit the current one with the new version number. Aish! sorry guys.

Let's try to get back to #1 again on the vote tally. Be sure to vote all three of your slots for 1.44.

Seems to be another new version 1.58 with 7 votes while (your) 1.44 has 77 votes and more test results. Should I give my vote to the later version, or for 1.44 and you will update it to 1.66?

I see Wine 1.0 is out today... Anyone other there have a linux setup that they can give this a try on?

Right now my FTP SE5 server is running win98 and has to be rebooted after each turn as we close into the end. (got to love windows) Would love to switch over to linux and have half a chance of recovering after a crash Smiling

Later,

I tried it yesterday with rc5 - if you disable the music, the game will let you into the setup menus (but they're extremely slow) - as soon as you start a game, though, it dies with some sort of error in the console about loading xfiles Sad
