Space Base Targeting does not work

Submitted by zilfondel on Mon, 2007-07-09 01:23. Space Empires V General

Hi - I'm new to SE5, although I played SE3 and SE4 quite a bit back in the day. Anywhoo, I am patched to 1.35 and on my new game decided to design my first space base and give it a try in the 'ol battle simulator to see how it will fare against my missile frigates. Mind you, I am still around an average of tech level 1-5 for most things...

My frigates are set to engage at max range, and are armed with 2 lvl.1 CSM's.

My Space Base has 2 x PD blasters and 2 x PD Cannons, both are level 4.
It also has a number of lvl 5 Meson Blasters and 4 lvl 1 CSM's of its own.

I set the Space Base to engage at max range, since own computer control, the attack frigates won't get very close.
The problem I am seeing - and I've read some other threads how people are describing problems with point-defense and targeting (not exactly a new problem to space games, now is it?). So this is my problem:

The Frigate dances around the edge of its targetting range, around 60-70 km, and continuously fires CSM's at the Space Base. The Space Base fires PD and kills about 95% of the missiles, which is great. But... it never returns fire!

I cannot get the stupid game to even target the Frigate! I set it to manual target, and point it to the frigate... nothing. It instantly undoes the lock, and then sits there like a sitting duck. I've tried moving around weapons on the Space Base, but I really have no idea where these mysterious 'weapon points' are; I have also tried a few different attack strats on the base... nothing.

It just sits there and refuses to target anything except missiles with the PD. The Meson Blasters and CSMs (which have the same range!) lie silent.

Is this one of those things that will be fixed in version 1.4x? This seems like an awfully basic problem - you can reproduce it with TWO ships.

Some other things I have tried, to no avail:
-classifiy space base as a defense base, attack base, attack ship, or defense base
-send actual enemy ships at it instead of my own
-remove PD weapons

=================================
then I decided to send non-missile armed ships at the space base - and guess what? The space base doesn't fire its non-PD weapons at ANYTHING! Even at point-blank range! If you manually assign a target, it immediately cancels the targeting info.

Why the heck do space bases not fire?!

You need supplies to fire CSM's. Normally a ship's engines will store the supplies that you need, but space stations have no engines. You'll have to add Supply Storage components to your base before it will fire

Thats what I thought initialy but why would the PD fire since that needs supply to do so as well.

Unless the PD is using up all the supply on the station and the main guns are not firing initialy because the ship firing the CSM is out of range and the main guns cant target the incoming missiles.

Does the base have shields and did they fail mid way through the combat, posibly this was masked by the few CSM's which did hit.

The "mysterious 'weapon points'" are parts of the model that determine where weapons will fire from and in what arc each one can target. They're set in the empirename_ships_XFileClasses.txt in an empire's folder, and unless you're using a new shipset that doesn't have them set up correctly they shouldn't be a problem. Unless I'm wrong and you're talking about an entirely different feature.

That's my two cents. If the firing points aren't messed up, the enemy ships are within range and your base has supplies (and ordnance), I have no idea why it wouldn't work.

Some (most) kinds of PD don't require supply or ordinance. CSMs require both.

My guess is same as those above, you may not have had supplies on the base. Missiles have space for ordnance but not supply, and they use a fair bit of supply, so you will need a few supply pods to make the base have a chance.

I'd also recommend a medium-range beam or two as supplement to the missiles. The refresh rate on missiles makes it likely a ship will only have to deal with one volley before it's in beam range of you, and unless you built that base with maximum armor it won't take long for it to get taken apart.

"did you give your base any supplys??"

lol, right on the money. I did some more testing last night, and guess what the AI auto generated design had that mine didn't?

Seems like I still have a lot to learn about this game, but damn is it ever good! I really appreciate everyone's input and suggestions here!

On the flip side, now you know that PD cannons/meson blasters don't need supply to work...

I have a similar problem - having followed this thread and done what you guys suggested, the problem remains.

I built a supply storage base so there is PLENTY of supply and ordnance. I have armor, Bomblet Missile, PD cannon and Flack cannons.

When attacked by fighters, the base seems to resist - I can't tell however, if it resists due to armor or is it shooting down their fire.

Problem is that PD cannon can target fighter so I assume they shoud be wiping out attacking fighters. But nothing happens, attack goes on until base dies. Why????

How many fighters did you send? i could just be that the base was overpowered and you didn't notice the minimal losses to the fighters, especially if you're playing stock

Double check the 'cargo' screen if you are running a battle simulator. Often times when you move around satellites and bases to place them, it will drain the supplies and ordinance to zero. So you might have to refill them again...

This happens to me everytime I move a Satellite or Base in my game, v1.35.

davor79, if i understand you right you are placing 2 bases in 1 sector. one with weapons, the other as ressuply base.
if that is right, it won´t work.
the ressuply base would ressuply other ships and bases, but only if they have place for supplys.
so you can´t support another base in combat with supplys that are on another base.

Another possibility is if his resupply base has the weapons, it may simply have been unable to hit the pesky fighters.

Did it have combat sensors? Any other techs boosting its chance to hit? Incoming missiles are fairly easy targets, fighters can be maddeningly hard to pin down.
