HowTo: Create a custom race with levels in its Racial Tech(s)

Start a game with a race with the Racial Tech(s) you need.
Play the game until you have at least 1 lvl in the Racial Technologies (or play a quick game with some research with an empire that is susceptible to research them).
Save the empire.
Create a new game with that empire: you can't edit the racial techs.
Start the game anyway, return to the main menu, and create a new game again. Re-load your empire. You can now edit the racial tech levels! Laughing out loud

No problem. I'm really happy myself to have found that!
It just that I was thinking about what you could do with a 500k research points start and thought it was a shame you couldn't spend them on racial techs... then I remembered a comment... http://spaceempires5.com/en-US/node/604
... and I decided to try to create a new game and reload it, like the fast way for playing default races in a custom game... and it worked!!! Laughing out loud

Creating your empire, starting a new game with max starting ressources & low research costs, researching your racial tech(s), saving your empire, and re-making the game also works very well.

Oh, and an empire saved after starting the game will have points spent in it's planet colonisation tech. You have to remove this level to get those points back. You will of course still be able to colonise planets of the same type as your homeworld(s).

I think this should fall in the catagor of a workaround. If you select a racial tech, like organic. then you should imediatly be able to add tech levels at the game start up.

I'm going to post this in the suggestions for MM to fix.
