Leaving for now

I know this may come as a shock to you all, but I think I'll be leaving Space Empires for a while... see, a few weeks ago I tried to dual-boot Linux, but while the installer was resizing my Windows partition it failed; Windows wasn't too badly damaged but some of my Control Panel icons were missing. Yesterday I finally decided to do something about it, so I pulled out my Windows XP CD and did a repair installation. Everything went fine, but I forgot that it was going to ask for my CD key again, and I couldn't remember where I'd left it. (In retrospect I realized that since this copy of XP was downloaded from MSDN Academic Alliance, I could have gone on the MSDNAA site to get the key, but I didn't think of that at the time.) So I decided to go ahead and wipe the drive and put Linux on it for good. Unfortunately this means I can't play SE5, and from past experience I seem to recall that switching mods in SE4 is not fun when you don't have Fyron's mod launcher utility. Honestly I think I've spent enough time on Space Empires anyway, and maybe I'll come back to it later, but for now it's time for a break. (Yes, I know I could just reinstall XP now that I know where to find the CD key, but I really don't feel like going through that again, and as I said, Space Empires has been taking too much of my time.) So I'm leaving all of my PBW games - I'll probably still frequent the IRC channel (you guys are great company Eye-wink) but don't expect me to play any more Space Empires for a while. Sorry about this, but I think this is a sign that I just need to take a break - the game has become so addictive that it's almost a job now to get my PBW turns in every day, and I'd rather find something else to do...

i wonder if SE5 would work through wine? or some such program? i'd test it myself but that'd mean setting up linux and trying to get wine working, which ive never been able to do >_

Any sort of alcohol should give good enough results. Laughing out loud

There's an IRC chatroom for this game? Who knew?

SE5 does NOT run through wine, but SE4 does.

the guys over at codeweavers.com are a cool batch of people, particularly Jeremy White, their CEO. He's pretty down to earth, and they have a system wherein you can bid money for a particular application. Whenever they're looking at which bugs in WINE should be fixed on a given day, he adds up the bounties he can collect, and then factors that in to what gets done.

transgaming.com is another option, but not even SE4 works on their product.

exelsier: you can get pre-packaged versions of wine for both ubuntu and fedore core. Check out wine.budgetdedicated.com for ubuntu/debian. www.winehq.com has more for all OSes. WINE has progressed VERY VERY rapidly in the last year. I'm just waiting for SE5 and BF2, to be honest.

I do 99% of my stuff on Ubuntu, and only boot into windows for SE5, and to upload data from an insulin pump. (yay vendor lock-in!)

Where's the IRC chatroom for this game?

From here:

Or simply channel #SpaceEmpires on irc.freenode.net if you have a dedicated program.

What a true group of geeks we are. Here's ekolis saying his heart-felt goodbys (for now) and the thread turns into a techie discussion Smiling

Anyway, You'll be missed while away. And there will always be a seat waiting for you onboard the nearest Battle Cruiser.

Anyone noticed that he is back for a while now and that he started this topic 6 month ago? Sticking out tongue
So ekolis, good to have you back here again.

Btw, so that it remains a tech discussion, why was this thread mentioned in "todays", even before Isopsycho wrote the first comment in 6 month?

Its the bugs that helped attract me to the game. I like a challenge. Smiling
