Disappearing Planet Info

Submitted by Quasimodo on Tue, 2006-10-03 20:44. Space Empires V General

Something that annoys me in SE4 is that when my ships leave a system, the information about enemy planets disappears from the map.

Now SE5 does the same thing. When my ships move out of scanner range, the flag and other planet info disappears from the map.

Does anybody else feel like it would make playing better if you could see where you've spotted enemy colonies, even though you can't see them right now?

I also think it would be nice to show, on the flag, how many turns its been since I scanned a planet.

Good Idea! but...

Submitted by Skystrider on Tue, 2006-10-03 22:57.

That would be incredibly useful. I always hated it when I used the "colonizable/empty" filter and ended up sending colony ships right into someone else's homeworld. Unfortunantly, the game would have to remember a lot more data, because not only would it have to record a bunch of numbers stating what your empire knows about some planet, but it would have to record a similar set of numbers for every empire's view about every planet in the game. Thats #planets times #empires = #ofDataSets. It might make the turns take longer (which wouldn't make me happy), but then again, it might be really quick and un-noticable if such a feature was implemented.

I don't think that something

Submitted by dwiebe18 on Wed, 2006-10-04 00:34.

I don't think that something like that would take that much extra time. I might be wrong but I just dont see how with the speed and processing power of most peoples computers these days that something like that would take that much extra time, what takes time is the movements of every unit of every empire moving around the map, the game has to keep constant track of potentially tens of thousands of individual units and move them around each turn.

To remember enemy ships. Planets couldn't add THAT much more..

Submitted by dwiebe18 on Wed, 2006-10-04 03:09.

What they underfunded? Can't keep track on their own? Sticking out tongue LOL Not enough harddrive space right.

It's a matter of scale

Submitted by gnol on Wed, 2006-10-04 03:39.

With 171 Colonies and I don't know how many uncolonized planets, things get a wee bit unorganized Smiling

This is one of those things

Submitted by LordHavoc on Wed, 2006-10-04 08:14.

This is one of those things that could cause trouble. Because if you enable planet memory and you don't 'keep up' with your intel, then theres nothing to tell you when the homeworld is cleared and empty...back to square one.

A feature is already in place which might help some of you. Using the 'systems to avoid'. Which filters out planets that are in the avoid list.

I started using the notepad

Submitted by Iron Giant on Wed, 2006-10-04 08:47.

I started using the notepad feature on systems to keep general info on the system so I don't forget.

I was losing too many colonizers when I would (senior moment!) come accross a juicy bunch of empty planets right on the edge of my empire and think "SWEET! some more breathable planets!" Only to send them again to their doom against the neutral AI that lived there...

Dim the flag

Submitted by gnol on Wed, 2006-10-04 08:49.

Well, the empire flag could be dimmed for planets not in view at the moment, with a note saying "1.3 years ago" or something to that effect.

Built-in Notes

Submitted by Captain Kwok on Wed, 2006-10-04 08:52.

There are also system notes you can make using the "System Report" option via right-click menu in a sector hex or on the map screen.

The original idea is good

Submitted by AngleWyrm on Wed, 2006-10-04 08:59.

The original request of preserving the inhabited status as an option is a good idea, because then it will show up in the planets list, and ships list.

That's a good idea, I would 2nd that. Because systems in view would constantly be "lit up".
