German Forum

Submitted by evilginger on Fri, 2007-06-22 14:57. Website Related

given the recent release of a german language version of SEV is it fair we have no German forum.

I dont think so and would sugest that one is added as I know what its like having to use a non native languae forum.

Whoops... Just noticed this post today.

Although I feel somehow capable to deal with the English forum, I'd welcome a German one. Then nobody would be forced to read my "interpretations" of the English grammar, and all of you English readers would avoid a headache. Smiling

As I see it, there are a few potential problems with adding language specific forums. I just post these as things to consider (food for thought, if you will).

1) The sysadmins and moderators can't really administer/moderate threads in a language they cannot read. This might make Strat First management wary of the idea, and is probably the biggest hurdle to overcome for anything official.

2) You won't be able to get help on questions posted in a language many of the users of the forum can't read. Having a single common language keeps everyone on the same page.

3) If you add a German language version, you have to add all of the other languages SE5 is sold in (French, Spanish, Italian) to be fair, which will further fragment the user base.

4) Don't worry too much about less-than-stellar English grammar; plenty of native speaking posters have a poor grasp on the language as it is. Eye-wink

Some feedback to the food for thought Eye-wink

1.) I agree to 100%. Manageing a German forum might be a problem for the sysadmins. But - as far as I'm aware of - the English forums aren't moderated in a strict way either. So having the "report post" link would be the first way, additionally some German users might be willing to offer assistance (if wanted of course).

2) You are right again. But for sure users with a basic knowledge of German and English will be active in both forums, and ideas will spread over both languages.

3) That's the easiest one to debate on Eye-wink: Isn't there already a French forum? (Didn't use the French language button yet)

4) Well... humm.. Thanks. At least that makes things less worse. But I'm sure that it's not "just" a headache for native-speakers to read the essence of some English lessons, these innovative sentences have to be invented first. What I wanted to say: Describing problems in a detailed and understandable way is not always easy, the game being localized and German making things even worse. For sure some questions, e.g. concerning the lame AI or having "mute" empires, will be solved in native language much faster and easier.

There is a french language forum and has been since fairly early on not been on to have a look since my grasp of writen french is not good being dyslexic I speak other languages but am only literate in english (well sort of with a good spell checker)

As for moderation this forum is very lighly moderated and I am sure some one could be coopted to do it part time. I would also add being a board gamer that there should be a good market fot the game in german as most of the best board games are produced in germany and very popular even if a few are origionaly english ones from our largly defunct board games industry.

3) The French button only translates the non-added content in french (and not even the forum descriptions).

I'd wager that the French interface setting only exists because S1st is based in Quebec, and legally compelled to have French versions of their sites.

You can always install the "English" version from your game disk and patch it to the latest US patch version. You can even keep two installs side by side, one German and one English.

Not being beholden to some random translation company's schedule to translate patches is not helpful? Being able to play all the mods and use the custom shipsets without hassle is not helpful? Being able to actually play with an international audience, not just other Germans with the German version of the game, is not helpful?

Version 1.33 is way, way out of date. You will want to patch it to the latest, 1.74...
