Solar Collector Base please?

synchrow's picture
Submitted by synchrow on Mon, 2007-06-04 19:57. Space Empires V General

i've built a star base with loadsa solar collectors, prolly about 20-30, with basic sensor and a few cargo holds. it's a large starbase with no armor, nor guns. a supply pt production centre. i hope.
rem, this is ship based solar collector, NOT planet based [i dont have any of that tech.. it may be crystal based].

now i figured with one of these 'bases' each SC would reap 55 supply pts every turn and with so many of them i figured any ship i leave in that system low on supplies would be resupplied fully within one turn.. or thereabouts.
but haven't really seen that yet.

also, i was hoping any supplies not being taken for ships in system etc would be stored in the cargo hold but every turn the cargo holds stay empty. possibly the supply pts are going to the planet it orbits but that doesn't hold much, only about 1000 pts. admittedly it is always full but i have no way of telling whether solar collector starbases are actually of any use .

for all the resources they took to build and the amount they use up each turn... is there any point in keeping them? where do supply pts from solar collectors go?

[this was the only way i could think of to produce lots of supply pts quickly other than building resupply centres on planets... not much use if you only have 2 planets in a contested system].

If the supply on the base is full, they don't get anywhere. You can manually transfer supplies to other ships or planets and then let the solar panels re-fill the base.

Cargo bays do not hold supplies. Supply Storage components are what store supplies. Furthermore, unless you are playing IRM there is no way for a ship/base to auto-resupply ships that are in the same system but not in the same sector. Do note that multiple Resupply Depots stack, but presumably the situation isn't compatible with this.

In which case all that's left is to get your low supply ships to this sector and resupply manually - or start building Supply Storage ships that'd travel back and forth between these uber supply bases and your ships.

That's a really good idea, I know I have trouble keeping ships supplied. It would only be a mid/late game option due to tech requirements, but it would be then that you would need the extra supply. I'll try it when I get home from work in the game I'm playing.

I've been using solar collector bases for a while and they are useful when used correctly. As Psieye said, cargo bays do not hold supplies. supply storage components are what store supplies. All you have to do is go into the Designs window, select your supply base, click upgrade, replace the cargo bays with supply storage components, click create, then retrofit the already built supply base.

hmmm.. you would've thought with all that free space going empty the supplies would fill up there. i dont see why they shouldn't. supplies would be fuel or ship spares so why not store them in a cargo bay? seems a bit naff they can't be stored in this way. kinda like moving house and packing stuff away but not using the orange cardboard boxes cos the gf says so ["they're for my cartoon porn collection only!"].

must be summat to do with packaging, eh?

cheers, guys.

I'd really not want to have my rocket fuel keepd in the same cargo bay as my trigger happy troops!

well maybe the cargo only carries solids, and therefore it's more like not putting the fish in a cardboard box instead of the fish tank. or maybe the "supplies" aren't even a substance as such (like electricity) and so need very specific storage. as for ordinance maybe it needs certain levels of shielding, not provided by the cargo bay, or something to prevent the crew from bieng irradiated/accidentally blown up.

Storing supplies in a cargo bay would be a bad idea. You wouldn't want to store anti-matter (contra-terrene) with matter and without proper shielding. Nor would you want to have your crew be bombarded with loose ions (ion engine).

Not to mention that it would be horrible from a gameplay perspective... it would add almost no value, but would increase micromanagement at least an order of magnitude. The load remotely orders would become useless, because any time you pass over a supply-filled planet, all of your cargo space would be gone. Its just as bad an idea as making planets have "universal cargo," where pop, units and facilities all use the same space...

Glad we dodged that bullet.

Why not just put quantum reactors on every ship? I usually try to get them early in the game...
