Weapon Platforms

Submitted by Chen H on Mon, 2007-06-04 14:44. Space Empires V FAQs

Do weapon platforms need supplies and ordinance? Also, should I place armour on them?

I am using BM 1.06.

No. They will use the supplies from the planet, I haven't actually used BM but I would assume that you don't. Armour will make them last longer, just like ships. I guess you'll have to figure out if you need the weapons or the armour. Good luck.

Get the big platforms and you won't have to worry about it one of my oppoents in KOTH uses 2 on each planet decked out with like 6 meason blasters and such with a nice load out of armor too..

Another thing to try is weapon mounts, a few levels of these increase your weapon damage greatly. Only work on direct fire weapons though, which is a bit of a bummer because I'm a sucker for Capital Ship Missiles, have loved them since SEIII.

They use the planet's supplies/ordnance but you still require containers for said supplies/ordnance.

So if the WP computer core (which holds some supply) is destroyed, the WP won't fire anymore?

One large platform full of shields will provide 13,500 points of shielding, almost as much as the Planetary Shield facility, 15,000.
Put a couple of those on the homeworld(s) alond with one full of point defense and your missile & beam weapons will have plenty of time to rip up the attacking ships.

I don't think it works quite like that. A weapon platform's shields don't give the planet any shields -- instead, if the weapon platform is hit, the damage is deducted from the shields. When a ship fires a weapon at a planet, what that weapon actually hits is determined randomly (I think...), so it has a chance to hit a weapon platform. But that same weapon has an equal chance of hitting, say, the space yard, or resupply depot.

But, once everything on the planet (facilities, weapon platforms, troops, etc) is destroyed, then the population starts taking damage. So, a heavily shielded weapon platform might still be a good idea -- you won't be protecting your facilities (which a shield facility does), but you will be protecting your population, and at the measly cost of one little weapons platform.

And, yeah, armor or shields on your weapon platforms is a good idea. Otherwise, as soon as they start taking damage, their ability to defend your colony will take a dive. Heavily defended weapon platforms, with an array of weapons, are really damaging to an attacking force.
