Civ 4 is the most moddable game I have played yet. I made a decent sized mod for it that changed how culture worked (or was supposed to, the game doesn't even check to see if a city will flip if it's not in control! This could be fixed with the SDK, but that's a different monster than python), added a bunch of buildings, and made the resources much more important for general infrastructure.

Cool. Did you upload your MOD(s)? Or selfishly keep them for yourself. Laughing out loud

That's entirely random... at least provide a link to the referenced thread...

Yes, Mylon has released a Civ4 mod, called the Mylon Mod. Eye-wink

Always thought SE4 was the most moddable. Smiling

SE4 is a pale shadow of what you can do in Civ4 (or even SE5, itself but a shadow of Civ4). Also consider contemporaries of SE4 like Half-Life.

You have to do math to set up SE4 components/facilities anyways; SE5 just removes the tedious step of iterating out all of the levels. Eye-wink

Because people who enjoy games like the Space Empires series will probably also enjoy the Civ series.

And this subforum is specifically for discussing things that aren't SE.

I'm a Civ fan as well and often switch between the two when I get bored. Smiling

SE4 graphics were easier to do IMHO. Smiling

A lot of SE5's graphics are the same; components and facilities are still static images, for example. Ship modelling is the same for anyone that moved beyond the limits of Doga, since you would still have to make 3d models to render them anyways. Stellar object graphics aren't hardly any more difficult, since all one really needs to do is play with texture files; the sphere planet model is good enough. Eye-wink Sure its a little more complicated, but its far more rewarding.

The datafiles and scripts in SE5 seem more difficult and there seems to be fewer mods than in SE4, at least so far. I'm trying to understand the scripts now so I can make an AI that plays like me (for better or worse Laughing out loud ).

There were hardly any mods available for SE4 a year and a half after its release date. In fact, I think there are actually more SE5 mods available now than there were SE4 mods at this point in its life.

What's so difficult about typing your math in Components.txt instead of Excel?

Take a whack at the AI yourself. I'm planning it myself. Smiling
