Space Empires IV vs Space Empires V

Submitted by emcgman on Mon, 2007-05-28 23:27. Space Empires V General

Hey everyone,

I'm new to these games, but now have both. Are there people who prefer IV to V?. If so why.

Thanks,

emcgman

Is there more depth of gameplay in any way to SE V, than SE IV.

Thanks

I'd echo that, SE IV is rock-solid, runs FAST, instant response on all clicks (unlike the 1 or 2 second delay on SEV), and the interface is BEAUTIFUL.

Unfortunately, any of the flaws in SE IV are still present in SE V, while SE V introduced all sorts of new ones. The old flaw of not knowing how many facilities you had added to your planet build queue until it gave you the error message that you had added one too many, is still there.

The fleet list screen is still massively flawed, and they have removed many of the coolest information from the display (like ship experience) and replaced it with meaningless economic statistics. I am a ship warrior, not an accountant!!!

Despite all that, I am happy with SE V, it is visually BEAUTIFUL, I can customize music, I get to see my Klingon fleet bearing down on an enemy homeworld with battlemusic blaring, seeing my glorious D-7's and F-5's in full 3D spendor. I like being able to fight the ground war, and I like the sensors and having to manually explore each new system and set up radar stations to cover my own systems (would have been nice if they just gave all your planets the latest sensor range, more realistic than having to build a spy satellite and maintain it) I also like the change to hexes, big hex fan here as are most gamers Eye-wink

Given the strong support history given to SE IV, I know that SE V is stilll just a wee babee, and with time, they will work out most of the bugs and improve the performance.

All that is done before the naked stars is remembered

You should be able to mod in a "sensor facility", or give spaceyards a sensor ability with a range/level formula calling on the sensors tech level... unless Aaron forgot to activate that ability for facilities Sticking out tongue

Well, the treaty system is a lot more extensive. Once the alliance feature gets debugged that might also be a nice enhancement. The poor AI's are still a bummer though. As I never play stock SEIV, I don't know whether it's the mod AI's that make for worthwile opponents or not. Together with the painfully slow turn processing and sometimes inadequate UI these are reason enough for me to keep on giving SEIV the nod. Too bad, because it's quite entertaining to see SEV battles played out at a glorious 1920 x 1200 resolution Eye-wink

I can customize music
You have always been able to customize the music SE4 plays, since release. For much of its history, doing so required burning a custom data/music CD (or making an image and mounting it). Settings.txt contains info on how each track is used (intro, main game, or combat). 1.93 changed the game to use MP3 music files instead of CD tracks, so its easier now than before.

Well, you only needed to burn a CD if you didn't already have one with all the songs you wanted to use. For a while, I had Settings.txt programmed to play selections from one of my classical CDs. (I remember using "Also Sprach Zarathustra" for the intro screen.)

"Good morning, Pooh Bear," said Eeyore gloomily. "If it /is/ a good morning," he said. "Which I doubt," said he.
