-292 degrees Celcius!

Wade's picture
Submitted by Wade on Thu, 2006-09-21 23:02. Bug Reports

Most of the early bug reports for the demo of Space Empires V are at www.shrapnelcommunity.com

---------------------------------------------------------------

-----SEV: demo: Um...my home planet's temperature for the Terrans is -292 degrees Celcius! Also, absolute zero is -273.15, according to Wikipedia.

I wonder about the gravity and radiation too.

Seems these Terrans are quite TOLERANT to cold (especially BEYOND absolute zero).

How do I edit? Nevermind...How do I delete?

Submitted by Wade on Thu, 2006-09-21 23:50.

Um...How do I edit my post/comment? If that is possible it should be noticable.

Nevermind. Now I see it. How do I delete my post?

Actually, it seems that my starting post could noy be edited; even before I did the second post.

Wiki

Submitted by LordHavoc on Fri, 2006-09-22 08:23.

You know that the educational institutes don't endorse wikipedia as being a valid source of information...even though its right Sticking out tongue. But the below zero..that's amusing.

Kwok's fix

Submitted by MageKing17 on Fri, 2006-09-22 09:00.

I find it interesting that without Kwok's fix, the game is determined to make every planet as cold as possible. Sticking out tongue

Temperature Fix

Submitted by Captain Kwok on Fri, 2006-09-22 10:36.

I've made the following formula which eliminates the beyond absolute zero thing:

IIF([%HexDistanceToCenter%] <= 5, 500 - ([%HexDistanceToCenter%] * 100) + Random(-50, 50), MAX(-273, 300 - ([%HexDistanceToCenter%] * 50) + Random(-50, 25))) + (([%NumberOfStars%] - 1) * 100)

Place this formula in the formulas.txt file for the demo under Planet Temperature. Remember the temperature/radiation/gravity is only cosmetic.

Filtered HTML

The problem was that you had a "greater than" symbol in your expression... in order to limit erroneous HTML, the comments are put through a basic filter to ensure it doesn't break the layout and dataflow.

All I had to do was replace the > with a ">" and it should now display as wanted. I'm also on the lookout for a module that will replace these special characters automatically....

Thanks. I forgot about angle brackets with the html based code here. Sticking out tongue

The game isn't making it

Submitted by Mr Snuggle Bunny on Fri, 2006-09-22 14:28.

The game isn't making it -292 degrees celcius...

Planet Temperatures are CRAZY

Submitted by StarHunter5 on Sun, 2006-09-24 22:34.

I saw Temps below Absolute Zero too.
I applied your formula and the planet went to 196 degrees celcius (385 F) while another planet was -300 Celcius.

Maybe the program needs sometype of range check for the temperature to keep it valid range.
OR
The formula needs to be reworked.

Formula works fine

Submitted by Captain Kwok on Sun, 2006-09-24 22:46.

The formula is fine - but you'll need to generate a new map as it won't effect current games etc.

Temp MUST be cosmetic

Submitted by StarHunter5 on Tue, 2006-09-26 14:11.

I have seen Temperatures for an Ice planet ranging upto 231C (447F) there would be NO ICE on the planet at all at those Temperatures.
I have also seen a gas giant with a temerature of 288C (448F) and a rock planet with a hydrogen atmospere that has a temerature of 330C (626F) - THERE would be no hydrogen in the atmospere, as well as rock planet with a temerature of 279C (534F) that was decribed as NORMAL, If this is a normal planet for colonization then I would not want to live there.
I know that the temerature MUST be cosmetic but it should also be realistic.
Now do not get the wrong idea I have really enjoyed SPACE EMPIRES IV and from what I have seen of V it will even better.
It just would be nice if the temeratures were realistic.
At least your formula does seem to eliminate the problem with temeratures below absolute zero which is impossible.
That is a step in the right direction.

Temp in SEV

Submitted by tmcc on Tue, 2006-09-26 14:17.

I have a better idea. If temp is cosmnetic and physically ridiculous why not get rid of it and use the space to display something of value like how many WPs or Fighters are on the planet, or how long until the current item in the queue is done, or anything that could be of meaning in the game.

I miss the planet descriptions

Submitted by AngleWyrm on Wed, 2006-09-27 21:44.

I liked the descriptions.
"Small world covered in organic storms."
"Unstable planet with harsh tectonic activity."

That gives a lot more flavor than 3.6 mR/yr.

Maybe there could be a planetary description box below the planet's vital statistics?

Planet Descriptions

Submitted by StarHunter5 on Wed, 2006-09-27 23:04.

A description of the planet sounds good.
Maybe a description of what the first-in scouts sees when they first discover the planet.

I second that one, who cares

Submitted by LordHavoc on Thu, 2006-09-28 08:41.

I second that one, who cares what temperature the planet is when my race would be living in a dome anyway. Unit count or at very least a cargo readout would be very helpful.

I wouldn't mind a place on

Submitted by dwiebe18 on Thu, 2006-09-28 14:48.

I wouldn't mind a place on the main screen to display what a planet is building when u click on it. SO you dont necissarily have to go into the queue all the time to check.
